I live in the South Lakes area and find the area very safe area and I spend a lot of time walking the trails.

I do understand that there are some safety issues near the Hunters Woods shopping center. For that and other reasons the properties I suggested are in the eastern part of south Reston, with the exception of the last two on the list that are heading closer to Hunters Woods. I generally think that the farther west you go in South Reston the more safety problems that you may encounter.

My husband and I just moved from Reston to Ashburn. I lived there 6 years; he lived there 8. We both really liked living there (rented on both the north and south side of the toll road, so I feel we have a good grasp on the Reston "experience") because everything is really close.

But we noticed crime is rising. I second Hunter Woods area being not as safe as you'd expect from Reston. But even north of the toll road is experiencing an increase. A few months ago, we heard 6 gunshots fired one evening and then again another evening, as well as having seen some drug deals go down first hand and heard reports of a sexual assault, and we lived in a pretty good neighborhood.

The thing I really don't like about Reston is lack of street lights in the neighborhoods. There are a lot of pedestrians and cyclists, so not only did the lack of lights make me nervous regarding potential pedestrian accidents (which have happened there), but it made me not want to walk anywhere after dark.

It's also getting busier since the Wiehl station opened. I don't know if I'd recommend moving there over other suburban towns like Ashburn or (north) Sterling. We don't really miss it.

Stay way from north Herndon and south Sterling areas.
