Are there any major differences in living in these two areas? We've been looking for houses in purcellville, but have recently seen some houses we like in Waterford. We are not conservative (which I hear most of the area is) and will be moving with young children.

Waterford proper has a lot of building restrictions because of its historic past. So, be sure to check that out. If some of the houses you like are in the historic town area and need repair/fixing up, be sure you can afford to do so while complying with the building requirements.

Why not look at Fairfax or Arlington County then?

We live in Fairfax County now, but not in the best school district. We love the beauty and space of western Loudoun, and the schools are good...

While both are actually large areas, the only real main difference is the proximity to amenities. In Waterford, your closest amenities are the Purcellville amenities.

ditto^ Depending on where in Waterford you will likely be going to Purcellville as your "town" for shopping etc. Both are great towns, share the same schools once you get out of elementary school so really its just what you like. when we moved here 7 years ago, we looked in Purcellville, Leesburg, Lovettsville, Hamilton and Round Hill. The houses i liked the most were in Waterford and Purcellville but we ended up on Round Hill due to cost/value and proximity to route 7 for commuting east. Some areas of Waterford are way out there, quite remote and on dirt roads. I happen to like that, but it is not for everyone. I know several families in Waterford via our kids friends and they love it there, though it is a bit far from amenities.
