Someone I know was put into detox and then he went to Alexandria Community Shelter. He said he cannot sleep with people talking loudly until 11-12 o'clock, the food has no taste, you may be lucky to get your clothes washed because someone puts a load in and forget. No one can take the clothes out of the machine and put in the dryer so that person can do their clothes. You have to tell whoever is at the desk and then wait for them to leave their post (movie on the company computer) to put the clothes in a plastic bag. He talks about some are treated better than others such as who can stay in and who has to leave for the day by 9:00 and cannot come in before 4:00. Has anyone else heard these stories for I am going to try and get him out before something happens to him? He said he got more help from detox than there, he said the staff act like they don't know what to do or don't care and if someone complains about someone else the staff believes the complainer.

Compared to what an old friend of mine had to deal with in the Alexandria City Jail, your buddy is coming out ahead. News flash, community shelters are not owned by Hilton.

Homeless shelters are not great places in general. I certainly hope ours in the City of Alexandria can be as good as it can be in terms of helping people find a step up. I have not personally heard of stories like this myself. You can try reporting this to the City via Call Click Connect https://request.alexandriava.gov/CCC/#tab=Find

The more the Council and City managment know, the more they can do (although budget constraints may impact some problems)
