Why not look for a 70's split that has been added on to and totally redone? You will think you are in a brand new home.

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. While I'm not averse buying an older home, it's discouraging seeing one 1971 rambler/split level on .1 acre after another... for $600k in and around the beltway. We experienced the same frustrations here in Hawaii, although a view of the Pacific Ocean makes up for a lot of shortcomings in the house! Sounds like Chantilly, Ashburn, etc would be ideal- but the commute to Bolling is just too brutal.

Will be flying back in 10 days to begin driving around- will likely start in and around Kingstowne and expand from there...

Kingstowne is a popular area and your commute would be a lot better than living in Ashburn, but any newer home you find closer to the city (even the ones in Ashburn) do not have large lots. You are likely to find a larger lot with older homes.
