How about the reverse commute leaving @ 6 pm?
Claremarie is describing a commute from within the McLean HS district - not Oakton or Langley. Some commutes to DC from within the Langely district would be comparable, but you'll have an appreciably longer commute to DC from anywhere in the Oakton HS district (at least after 7 AM).

Thank you. We'll clock it during our vacation in July. To and fro. Car versus metro. Any other thoughts?

6 pm is not so good -- and it's really hard to find "back ways" out of the Foggy Bottom area. Sorry....

Keep in mind that your July test runs won't be representative of a commute in, say, October, especially the commute by car. Traffic volume is lower in July and August.

Camer - our family is looking to relocate to the Fairfax schools area and I came across your post. Would you mind sharing what you decided and let me know if you (or anyone) else has any suggestions about where we should look for a house. My husband will be working at Fairfax hospital. We have 3 kids, 4, 6 and 8. We've been considering Great Falls, Vienna and Oakton. Thanks so much!

You might want to start a new thread, since your inquiry isn't really focused on Oakton HS vs. Langley HS - also, judging from her last posts from late 2009 it seems that Camer's familiy had turned its attention away from NoVa to the Richmond area.

Michgc just started a thread that included great information about the pros and cons of the Town of Vienna. Vienna is a good option for someone working at Fairfax Inova. Much of Vienna lies outside the "Town of Vienna" in unincorporated Fairfax County - the main difference from the Town is that the residential neighborhoods are a bit newer and car-centric, and there are many more properties in the $600K - $1M range (whereas houses in the Town of Vienna tend to be either older ramblers or brand new, and quite expensive, houses).

There are also some really nice neighborhoods in, for example, the Mantua section of Fairfax that you might consider that would offer a relatively painless commute.
