Yeah Metro from West End Alex. to Ballston takes forever.

If I'm heading up that way in the morning I almost always take George Mason.

If you are coming from that part of the West End, I would suggest going further west by taking Lincolnia to Columbia Pike (by the Harris Teeter plaza), then turning right onto Columbia Pike, and taking that in to a left on Carlin Springs Rd, then straight into Ballston. Bypass all that Glebe and/or George Mason stuff altogether. (Or, if you simply must ride on a portion of George Mason, you can take George Mason from Carlin Springs to get to Wilson Blvd.)

fromuke and S Walker to:Little River Turnpike to:Lincolnia Rd to:38.838103,-77.153978 to:N Carlin Springs Rd to:N Randolph St - Google Maps

Sorry but I'm going with the consensus on George Mason. Carlin Springs has the 25B bus traveling on it which always makes frequent stops and has a school on it which will add school buses to deal with.

It all depends on your work hours. My commute from Harris Teeter (or more specifically, the drive-thru Starbucks at the Harris Teeter plaza ) to Ballston via Columbia Pike|Carlin Springs takes me 15 minutes most days.

It is terrible because of these reasons.

1. NO CENTER TURN LANE!!!!!! Cars wanting to make left turns will hold up traffic forever because of the volume of oncoming traffic.
2. The stupid ART and Metrobuses on the right side of the road will compound the first problem meaning you'll have a very frustrating commute.
3. That bus stop on Glebe Northbound not even 40 yards after the Columbia Pike intersection usually backs up traffic to 12th St S meaning you'll have to wait at least two lights to go through the intersection of Glebe and Columbia.
4. The worst part is that interchange to go from Glebe Rd southbound to 395 South. Who in the designed that interchange?! I have to wait 5 minutes for a break in traffic then gas it to get onto 395 which can be death-defying sometimes.

Sure my commute aint but 30 minutes at the worst but it is a very frustrating 30 minutes. If I leave at 4 it isn't horrible, after 4 !!

If anyone has a way to get to Ballston Commons without Glebe Rd from West End Alexandria I'd love to hear it.
I know exactly what you mean. When I drive on Glebe Road I tend to shift between left and right lanes: I go to the left lane to avoid being held up by buses that stop to pick up people, and I switch to the right lane to avoid being held up by people making lefthand turns. It's like an obstacle course and, like you said, badly designed. My guess is that it was designed in a time when there was much less traffic. That's true of most of this area: There just isn't enough road space to accommodate all of the people.

You just summed up every traffic problem in the DC Metro area discussed on this forum with that one sentence.
