My students heard it at recess in Springfield. They asked what it was and I said, "I bet it's the base at Quantico".

I have stated this many, many times before...Quantico is always doing drills. It can be heard from quite some distance dependant upon the weather. I live in Bristow and can hear it all the time. It makes the windows rattle and a rumbling sound of the ground.

InsideNova normals posts when they are going to be doing drills to alert people. And yes I heard it early this morning also.

Yep. I wasn't surprised and knew what it was.

Now, I think lightning just hit a house behind us a few minutes ago. It was close. The strike rumbled our house and we heard glass shatter, followed by the sirens.

We live in Stafford, right next to Quantico, and a few things actually fell off the wall this morning while they were blowing things up. When I first moved here I had never lived near a base so it surprised me a bit, but you get used to it as it happens all the time.

I've always wondered how much money they spend a week or a month or a year just blowing things up. Including the gas, the equipment, and everything else around it.

Everytime they get loud in Fredericksburg, I'm awaiting another earthquake! When last year's quake hit, it was preceded by a HUGE BOOM...which I thought was Quantico....only louder! Never knew earthquakes produced sound prior to the shaking!

Marine Corps Base Quantico

Munitions training at Quantico.

"North American Explosive Services has a permit to blast through 8 p.m. Friday. There was also a blast at 1:30 p.m. at 10000 Ox Road, the Vulcan plant, according to Fairfax County Police.
In addition, ordnance testing is occuring Thursday through 9 p.m. at Marine Corps Base Quantico, according to Fairfax County officials.
Sometimes, the wind and clouds make sounds travel further than usual.
According to the base's Facebook page, the explosive munitions training started early Wednesday. Training is scheduled from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.
"Effects of training vary depending on weather conditions. Overcast conditions may increase noise and vibrations," according to a note on the Facebook page."
