As an Alexandria resident of 7 years, I have to defend my beloved city. Yes, Alexandria has some ugly parts (Rt 1), but what city doesn't? And it's not so ugly that I won't drive there to go to Krispy Kreme! LOL! There is some crime there and in the Landmark area, but every city has crime. And believe me, coming from Atlanta, Alexandria has been like Disney World as far as safety for me. I've never felt unsafe here. The "red brick" is quaint and historical and most people actually come to Alexandria as tourists because it's so unique and beautiful. I agree, Alexandria is hella expensive, and that's the only fault (although it's a big one) I find with it. But that's just my opinion, just like you not liking Alexandria is yours. Just didn't want to discourage anyone who might want to move or visit here, so offering a balanced viewpoint. But yeah, the cost of living DOES stink.

Lack of public transportation and limited car parking is a big drawback to the area.

actually I think the path of the RR right of way the metro uses had more to do with the metro route. At the time the metro system was laid out in the late 60s early 70s, old town was pretty much ALL "bad elements"
Perhaps you are thinking of Georgetown?

There is a free shuttle bus (looks like an old trolley) that goes from the river up King Street to the King St Metro.

It depends on your definition of Old Town. It sounds like yours starts at Washington St./GW Parkway. To me, once you step off the King Street Metro and look to the east, you're essentially in Old Town.
IMO between four DASH bus routes and the free King Street Trolley, Old Town is served pretty well by public transit. Would-be bad elements can still get to the waterfront if they take said buses from the Braddock Road or King Street Metro stops. My guess is that the powers-that-be, partially encouraged by residents I'm sure, didn't want to interrupt the historic flow of the neighborhood by placing a station any further east.
I'll concede that the density of the area doesn't make parking very convenient.
