Hello all. I’m looking to purchase a real detached home with even just a tiny bit of land on it almost anywhere here on O’ahu. So far, it seems that I can only afford Waianae. That is a terrible dangerous place to move to but I have heard that there are a few safe places to live there. I’m not sure where since I never have a reason to be on that side of the island.

My question to you all is where are the definitive places to find foreclosures/short sales on the island? For online, I’ve been using Coldwell banker’s website “cbpacific.com” since that real estate company is the biggest most well known on the island. But I’ve heard some people mention that there are other sources that are available to locate properties/land that isn’t present online. Especially foreclosures and short sales. Where do I find these?

The easy way is to get a realtor - tell him/her your price range - and have them send you properties. The hard way is to try to find it yourself - I'd start here Find Real Estate, Homes for Sale & Houses for Rent on Realtor.com - Realtor.com® and usually the description will tell you if it is a short sale.

Get a realtor.

If yu are just using the free services from reale state websites, you only gett he limited free info. but if you are working with a RE agent that person will go deeper into research to get information you need. Free = limited.

Yeah, I have a realtor already but I was thinking about other lesser known methods that may be out there.

Only your realtor will have access to the "less known methods" - if you don't think you are getting good service from your realtor - get another one.

On a similar note, in my search of a home, do you all think it would be feasible to get an affordable home in Waianae and commute everyday to Honolulu or just suck it up and get a condo in town closer to work?

How many of you all commute from Waianae to town and back everyday? I'm assuming that adds about 3-4 hours to your day just sitting in traffic.

Commute everyday during rush hour to Honolulu from Waianae? I'll stop short of saying nobody would ever do that but life is way to short to sit in bumper to bumper traffic for 3 hours+ a day and deal with the cost of gas - which over the years is likely to go up.

I'm interested in hearing from 5 day a week commuters during rush hour myself from Waianae.
