I think they're learning about cars and traffic, though, haven't seen as many run over as before. Don't see as many bufos, either. Maybe the mongoose are eating them. Hmm, do mongoose eat coqui? Be nice if something would!
They seem to go in waves, sometimes we will see lots of them and then not for awhile and then we see them again.
What's the lifespan of a mongoose, anyway? How fast can they reproduce? What are the reproduction triggers?
Around here, droughts seem to trigger mice population explosions. When it gets dry, all the grasses in the pastures and along the sides of the roads go to seed all at once. The mice get lots of food, they all reproduce with huge litters and a month or two after the grass goes to seed there's mice everywhere. We see them running across the roads, they're in the carport, the chickens are eating them and it alos increases the food for cats, owls and hawks, etc., etc. Maybe the mongoose are eating the mice, too?
