Aloha...

I'm working at getting a job in Hawaii at the airport and looking around early to check out best areas, close to the airport, nice area and affordable, but not killing myself in traffic everyday.

I'll be moving first for a couple months and will stay at an extended stay and shop around. Looking for a place to bring my 2 big dogs with some space - yard, even a small one! No kids so don't have to worry about that. Would love to be near the ocean but I live on an Island so not hard to find it if it's not in the backyard! Coming from San Diego so I'm prepared for rental pricing. I'd like to be comparable to what I'm paying here - if possible. Checking Craig'slist but you never know if it's the real deal or not.

Some specific questions:
1. Place close enough to use public transportation - maybe? Not sure how the system works so will look into that. What's the best town / area / subdivisions?
2. A good realtor that can check out some places and do a pre-qual?

I'll research this to the inth degree before moving but thought I'd throw it out there for some words of wisdom! Alot of that out there.

Mahalo for ur help!
Kaki

Well, that may not happen. 2 big dogs - rental - that might be the impossible dream.

What is your definition of "best"? The airport area isn't generally know as a "best" area. Downtown, Waikiki, Windward are all commutable areas to the airport.

You'll be very unlikely to find a realtor to check out rentals for you. You'll need to do the legwork yourself.

The Salt Lake area is on the other side of the freeway from HNL. Aiea, Pearl City, and Waikele might be other places you might be interested in.

Extended Stays? Dont exist. You can rent a funished room in a high rise for about 2200 a month. Oh yea they dont take pets. To be honest it depends on the hours you need to be at work. I live in Mililani without having rush hour traffic is 20 min. A place with a yard that takes pets. You need to get a better understanding of Oahu. Not to say it is impossable but highly unrealistic unless your willing to compromise. Crieglist is your best bet.

My record time driving from parking lot at the Craigside on Nu'uanu to the airport garage at HNL was a little over eight minutes. And yet, living far up on Nu'uanu feels more like country than living in town.

Aloha

We are moving over next month and found Zillow and Craigslist to be the best sources. We also have 2 labs and after searching hard for 3 weeks have found 2 places that will let us bring them but both are in Ewa Beach. Plan on either $50 extra a month for them or a pet deposit. Also plan on about 7 months before your dogs can enter. I really had the 120 days in my head but we started the process in early October and I'm looking at end of Feb or early March before they can make it over.
Good luck!

This might actually help the OP, if he moves over and leaves the dogs with caretakers while the process runs. He can get settled temporarily, hunt for the place he really wants, and decide if he really wants to be on O'ahu (or any island) in the first place.
