I am moving to Honolulu for a job relatively soon and need find a place to rent. I can spend up to $3,500/mth for a place. Pet friendly (larger dog and two cats), spacious (>1500sq/ft), and atleast 3 bedrooms and screened windows (indoor cats).
A place that is good to take a dog for a walk is a plus too!
Do not know where your are going to be living. Here is a link to check. You can check the different areas of town and the cost to live there.
Best of luck in your search.
We're moving to Honolulu in July and found our rental on Craigslist in May. If you can find someone local to check out the place on your behalf, definitely do that.
Good luck on your search.

That's the biggie in renting a place long distance... finding someone you trust who can check a place out in person AND who has compatible tastes and aversions. Without having such a person to represent you, follow the #1 recommendation here, and don't lease or buy a place without personally examining the place.
That #1 recommendation is to have a temporary place until you find the RIGHT place to rent.
The pet rental market is tight here. Watch craigslist for a couple weeks and you will see the pattern of places that are ALWAYS available and you'll see the occasional deal that comes and goes super quick. Anything priced too low to be true is mostly a scam. I would not rent ANYTHING sight unseen. When we moved here I had a list of 5 places to go see. The top place was WAY different than the pictures, and the neighborhood was super sketchy.
One of the places was shown by a guy who looked like he lived in his car...not sure how he got keys but I suspect he was a contractor to the unit and knew the owners were going to be out for a few weeks. Just long enough for him to get 1st and deposit from an unsuspecting couple.

I had no idea how difficult it is to find a 3bdrm place that accepts pets even at $3,500. There are only 6 units available from Nuuanu all the way to Niu Valley.
To the original poster, Just be sure that you are aware of the very strict rules of pets coming in to Hawaii. You need to look at the Agriculture Department's rule on what extensive items need to be completed before bringing pets into Hawaii. A rabies certificate from the University of Kansas is needed from your vet along with a lot of other proof of their vaccinations. If you have 120 days on the mainland to wait after you get your blood samples to the U of K, then you will not have to quarantine your pets when you arrive in Honolulu. Otherwise, if you enter before that 120 day waiting period, you will have to leave your animals with the Agriculture Dept. where they will keep them until that 120 day waiting time is up. That will cost money each day for you and is NOT good for your pets. Hope that you have already thought this through. We started our process last Sept, 2013 and were able to enter on Feb. 1st, 2014 without any quarantine at the facilities here in Hawaii. We double checked and triple checked that agr. Checklist so many times. Good luck to you.
Wonder what happened with this one... 1 post... Great post frisco. btdt.
Carmel apts allow dogs. My friends had Great Danes. We had two dogs there. Some breeds aren't allowed to enter (but they sure are there)
