We were there in mid-Oct. and a few of the leaves were just barely starting to change color. The reds were there, but we learned that we were about two weeks too early to catch the autumn colors. But that's ok cause I'm a summer person.
It is so lush with trees and grass that it must be beautiful when the leaves turn. We drove along side the eastern border way up the state. It's a road that runs parallel to one that is in Ark. and it's a very nice drive. Also, we were going to go on the Tahlimena Drive cause it's supposed to be very nice, but maybe next time. That's further south then you may want to go, too.
When are you planning to go?

Fall in Northeastern Oklahoma is spectacular. The best time to get there and catch the leaves would be sometime between the end of Oct and the middle of November, if I recall correctly. This can vary from year to year, so you might want to keep in touch with jessaka because she will have the local folks' ear on this.

First signs of Autumn across the country (frost map). Obviously, the first freeze in the southern portions of any color area will be toward the latter end of the range. For example, Jammie lives in an area that is color coded the same as the Northeastern part of Oklahoma, yet we know the first freeze date up there will be much sooner than in Northeastern Oklahoma, but it is within the range specified. These generally coincide with the agricultural "plant hardiness zone" maps the USDA puts out.

Cntygirl, here is a pic of some of your possible future friends. I got this pic on the website for indianmoundshorsecamp. These people are riding across the beautiful Illinois River near Tahlequah.
I rode this ride and a few others with Jess Johnson in my younger days, and my horse's younger days.
Here's a link:
Welcome
Jessaka, you might want to take a drive up the Illinois to check this out. The ride is schedulued for August 11-12, this weekend. The riders are often seen near the road.

More pics of Illinois River ride:
August River Ride Here is just some of the fun we had at the August River Ride at Green Country Stables! Pictures may take a minute to load so please be patient! Trail leader Jess Johnson is saddled up and ready to ride! Over 100 riders came to enjoy fun in the sun for the August River Ride! As long as you 'follow the leader' you won't have a problem in the river! But, sometimes folks just can't wait until lunch to have their swim time! Some riders took advantage of riding in the river to reload water guns! Beautiful weather and scenery made this ride a success!
Check out the fun we had! A favorite part of the River Ride is the lunch stop where we got a chance for water fun! Some folks jump right in.... ...and some just like to watch the action! Come and join the fun at our next River Rides July and August 2007
