Picked up a car to drive back from Chicago to Arizona. So just going through Oklahoma and don’t know what to do with this odd freeway / toll road garbage?

I usually just make sure I have change for the toll roads. And there are Interstate hwys in Oklahoma so you are not FORCED to take the toll roads.
They have change machines and usually there are human beings in the toll booths that can make change if you only have large bills. Only the off ramps to smaller towns are unmanned.
Seriously, if this dilemma is confounding you, I think your life is going to be one tough slog!

There most certainly is a another road option. Take the famous Route 66 through Oklahoma for free. If you don't like the drive on Route 66, get off of it by taking I-40 West in Oklahoma City.

Not sure I understand. You can't just carry a few bucks with you? There are attendants. There are also free roads, but it usually does not really pay to take them. You could take old 66 all the way down to I40. I've seen toll roads in other states, Kentucky, Kansas, etc. It's not just Oklahoma. They are kind of a pain but nothing to get worked up over.

Or just turn south at Tulsa until you hit I-40, then go west to AZ.
By saving a few bucks you get to drive on horrible rough hwys. some of which go through towns. Then I-40 east of OKC is one of the worst interstates you will find in America.
The turnpike is smooth sailing straight through to OKC with a 75 mph speed limit which will save you time and mileage, etc. It's your choice.

There are toll roads over the place in Chicago. So I'm not sure why there's such consternation about them; I-90 in NW Chicagoland, I-294, I-88 to name a few.
