LOL. I go to OK quite a bit. If you push the scan button on the radio here in NM and AZ you get Spanish station after Spanish station, in Texas you get spanish and country, but when you reach OK, you get Bible and preachers! Better be ready for that.

As for mountains, there are the Ouachita (pronounced "Wa****a") mountains of SE Oklahoma. Generally the Eastern 3rd of the state is rolling hills and mountains. Not mountains like the Rockies, mind you, but some very pretty country all the same. I grew up in small town Oklahoma and there are alot of small towns that are fine for raising kids, but it depends on your money situation and if you are looking for a high-paying job in one of those small towns you will look long and hard. As for demographics; you don't have to look at color to find the "right place" and your question sounds somewhat racist. I don't know you and am not sure, but you'll find a__holes in any color. Just look for a nice neighborhood and don't focus on color so much would be my advice.

Ya know I am anything but racist myself but demographics do play into where I want to live. Currently I am stationed in El Paso, Tx. Where my wife can't find a job because she doesn't speak spanish, as in with two specialized degrees she is refused and told straight out she will not be hired because of this. We can't shop anywhere downtown because no one will speak engish. She is currently being sent out of the military hospital here for procedures, but when we call to make an appointment there isn't a sole in the office that can speak english well enough to even make the appointment. Is that the guy you want caring for your family?
The city-data site has all that kind of information on it. As far as I know about 99% of Oklahoma is english speaking. If your concerns are whether the population is majority caucasion(sp?), black, etc. I can't nor would I answer that.

I totally understand about demographics. I guess to say "where is it best for whites" sounds a little crude, if anything at all. I don't for a minute think wecantdecide is racist, it's just that the comment was a little off color (pun intended). But seriously, Oklahoma is a great place and you can get away from alot of the hustle and bustle of the city there, unless you prefer to live in Ok City or Tulsa.

Uh, F.Y.I. it's not all preaching on the radio around here. People always exaggerate how heavily religious people are around here. Believe me, there's no more christians here than any other place.

That is so true Nameless. I hear that all of the time, and growing up in Oklahoma, then having lived all over when I go back home I see no difference in the amount of "in your face" religous zealotry than I do anywhere else. In fact, it may very well be that quite the opposite is true. Think about it, the more people you have complaining about religious zealouts in Oklahoma must actually mean there are more people there against that type of thing, right? Thought so..

Thumbs up mountain scenery

A really nice mountain area is Talihina(tal-ih-hee-nuh),OK, down in the SE corner about 60 miles south of McAlester and 90 miles west of Ft. Smith Ark. They have a nice big Indian hospital there and the cost of living is really decent. If you are bothered by being around Native Americans it's not for you. It is at the end of the Talimena(t-al-ih-meenuh) Drive which is a beautiful highway that meanders through the mountains clear over to Arkansas. The fall foliage is some of the best I have seen around the country and those hills are cool and great in summer. The fishing is really nice at all of the lakes and reservoirs around there too. Tornadoes are usually turned away by the mts and you only get the rain.
The people are friendly and will only joke about your funny accent when you come from other parts of the country. There's everything from Baptists to Mormon churches in town and the economy isn't bad. Just left there after 9 years because I was trapped inside all summer every year because of the high humidity. We had ice storms in the winter sometimes and the heat in the summer. We came back to SD even though my husband swore he would never shovel snow again. AC is good but not when you can't go outside without feeling like you are standing in a hot shower. If humidity doesn't bother you then you'll have no problem.
It is 3 hours to Tulsa or OK City, but there are enough good sized towns closer where you can get work, go shopping or just about anything else you need. You're not that far from Texas and Louisiana too, so short trips can take you about anywhere.
