Keep in mind that Council Bluffs, Iowa is literally right across the river into Iowa. That's another set of opportunities.

You will not find any jobs in Millard since it is neither a suburb or a separate town from Omaha. Millard is just a geographical area in the Southwest part of Omaha. The independent town of Millard was annexed by Omaha in the early 1970's, so it is just Omaha. It is also not filled with rich snobby people, lots of Millard especially around the older part is just Middle class people.

Stay away from 40th and Ames - North Omaha. Crime is pretty high in that area.

Papillion is great - This is where I live now. But boring. I think. However, living here pretty much my whole adult life is probably why it's boring. However, I can let my kids walk to school on their own and not feel unsafe - The schools are great, I think. There's plenty of sports your kids can join. It's all around really nice. Other than Papillion - most people would say West Omaha is the next best place.

We got a job offer in Cali - so that is why I am on this site. Nervous to be leaving the area! But excited to check out something new! I guess anywhere you go, you worry about what it's going to be like.

Oh, and you will have no probably finding a job. Go to the state of Nebraska website to look for a social worker job - or douglas county website. They almost always have openings in that field. Pay is probably a little low - but it also doesn't cost much to live here.

Ummm... That is actually not very accurate.

Too many people broad brush North Omaha, without even knowing what actually IS North Omaha.

Yes, there are SPECIFIC pockets and neighborhoods where there's a lot of gang & drug activity. Other than that, North Omaha is pretty quiet, including 40th & Ames.

It sounds like you might really enjoy the midtown Omaha area. Memorial and Elmwood parks are connected by bicycle and walking trails, it's right by UNO (you said your husband was going to school), and it has the charm of older homes and neat architecture. It is moderately diverse ethnically. You might also want to check out Westside District 66 for schools.

I would check out the areas bounded by 42nd, Center St, 90th, and Blondo

I would steer clear of Bellevue. It's a pain to get anywhere from Bellevue, and their schools aren't that good anyway. It is cheaper to live there, though.
