Hi -

I have a job opportunity in LA, but I have elderly family in Irvine who need me to check in with them a few times a week. I won't move if it means I'm unable to come back to them when needed - like Saturday/Sunday morning or after work in the evenings.

I love Manhattan Beach, but I really need to be realistic about getting back to Irvine a couple times a week. It's only about a 45-50 mile distance, but I know traffic complicates things and I'm just trying to get a real-life estimate.

So - anyone out there who makes that drive ?
Thanks!!

I used to do the drive from Mission Viejo to Long Beach (comparable in distance and almost the same route). It took two hours then, and that was 1990. Traffic is much worse now so expect a long long long drive at peak hours. Now I only work fifteen minutes away!!!! Life is so much better when it isn't in the car 24/7, so I don't think this looks great for you. Manhattan Beach and Irvine are too far away to make a peak hour commute a lot during the week.

Default belmont shore

You might consider a central place to LA and Irvine. If you like MB you would probably like Belmont Shore. You could go to LA or Irvine from there in about 45 minutes to an hour.

Don't even think about doing this drive in peak, it will drive you crazy. This includes most time during the weekdays and Saturday.

Live 1/2 between and take the back roads or live close to work and the look into the metrolink train from LA to Irvine:

Metrolink :: Irvine

I like Belmont Shore, but it's the parking that sucks! Plus, if you need to have a parking spot or a garage when renting an apartment there, you may have to pay extra $$$.

Default West LA to Huntington Beach

It'll all depend on the direction you're driving and the time of day. I make the LA - HB commute in the mornings and HB - LA in the evenings on the 405 ... about 32 miles each way for me. During weekdays, I've noticed that most of the congestion is northbound in the mornings and both ways in the evenings (but more southbound) ... I feel sorry for those poor souls.

My commute: mornings at 6:00 a.m. - 35 minutes; afternoon/evenings at 3:30 p.m. - 40 minutes; evenings at 5:00 p.m. - 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes.

It won't be so bad if your employer will allow you to pull flex time, and if you're willing to wake up early.

Hope all works out for you and your elderly relatives.
