When was the CV Parkway pic taken? I'm not quite sure when the road went in but guessing 63 maybe?

Here's a very good one.

Orange County, right? Lots of Oranges. Makes sense. Used to be part of Los Angeles County but as Ventura County used to be part of Santa Barbara County, OC broke off from LA County.

OK, so there's a city called Orange. Must be because of all the oranges in Orange County right? WRONG!

The City of Orange is named from Orange County Virginia which is named from William Of Orange born in 1650 in Holland. So, the naming of the City of Orange (which existed before the County of Orange) has absolutely nothing to do with the orange fruit.

"there was already a town by the name of Orange, named for Orange County, Virginia, which itself took its name from William of Orange. The fact the county took the same name as one of its towns may have been coincidence."

from

Orange County, California - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Orange County [VA] was named for Prince William III of Orange, a famous Protestant King of Great Britain and Ireland, by Ulster-Scots settlers in the 18th century. The family name of William of Orange was derived from the dynasty's ancestral origins as feudal lords of the French town of Orange, which was named by the ancient Gauls in honour of a Celtic water deity."

From Wikipedia

Quote:
Cypress was originally nicknamed "Waterville" due to the preponderance of artesian wells in the area, but was incorporated under the name Dairy City in 1956 by local dairy farmers as a means of staving off developers and to preserve their dairies, much like the then-neighboring cities of Dairy Valley in Cerritos and Dairyland in La Palma. However, after World War II, the land became too valuable for farming or ranching, and the dairies gradually sold out to housing developers during the 1960s, so that by the 1970s, no dairies remained. Many of the dairymen moved their operations to Chino, where development is once again pushing them out of the area.

That's not what they taught us in the 4th grade.

LaPalma was Dairyland, Cerritos was Dairy Valley and Cypress was Dairy City. Growing up in Lakewood in the 50's I remember all those dairies there and having milk delivered in bottles.

Here's a neat article in today's OC register about a book detailing the history of baseball in Orange County. Lots of really cool old photos
