Hey everybody. I have lived almost all of my life in Belgium. But i'm planning to move to OC. I have dual Belgian/US citizenship. And a big part of my family lives in OC. So it wouldn't be a problem staying in California, cause i don't need a visa, green card... But the main thing that i'm looking for now is to get a job in OC. I'm a high school graduate, i don't have a college degree. I was looking for California employment websites, but you already have to live in California to subscribe to that. And that is not the case right now . So it's pretty hard getting a job in California like that, so if anybody has some suggestions that could help me they're always welcome. I'm fluent in english, dutch, french and i also speak a little bit of german. Justin

How about becoming a foreign language tutor or translator? You could probably advertise your services on Craigslist and do pretty well.

With only a high school education, the best you can hope for is a minimum wage job. Paying less than 9 dollars an hour.
Very difficult to live..alone..on that income.

If it is practical, you may want to learn to speak Spanish.

With only a high school degree you will be competing with legal and illegal immigrants for jobs in lawn care, landscaping, construction work, food service, car wash attendants and the like. It is hard to get work that way. I have a friend who goes every morning to an employement office at 5:30 a.m. and stands and waits to see if anyone will hire him for the day (or for a weeks, or even a few months). Most of the jobs pay $9-15 per hour and that is difficult to live on. My friend shares an apartment with three other people. Other times he rents a cot in somone's garage. For a while he was sleeping in his car. It is hard to make it with no college at all. Orange County is expensive.

What do the locals think about him working at Disneyland or Knotts??? Even if it's low wages it's still working till he can find something better. I would think that Disneyland and Knotts would take him on since he speaks several languages. BTW, I grew up in the Los Angeles & OC during the 50s, 60s, and early 70s.

Very popular places to work. Likely hard to land a job at this time. Remember our high unemployment rate

No one should move here without a plan b. Lots of money. Or they are neurosurgeons

My opinion only

Hi Justinodj, I am from Belgium too and live 10 years in the South (marriage to an American). With a college degree and able to speak several languages (you probably speak a few too) I thought it would be easy to find a job. Sure you can't compare the South with OC but I would highly recommend you to enlist with temporary agencies. Before the increase of minimum wages I worked several jobs for $7.00/hour but thanks to being always willing to work no matter what, I have now a decent job thru the agency. Not a dream job but at least paying better than just trying to survive on $7.00. Give yourself time and unfortunately sometimes you need to be at the right place on the right time. Having family in OC you sure have a huge advantage. Good luck and don't give up - sometimes we all need to start small to eventually make it big.
