Palo Alto tops them all. But 5 OC cities appear on the top 20 wealthiest list:

No 6: Yorba Linda.

No 7: Laguna Niguel.

No 11. San Clemente.

No. 16. Mission Viejo.

Three other SoCal cities make the cut...

No. 9: Redondo Beach.

No. 10: Carlsbad.

No. 13: Thousand Oaks.

Important to note the survey only ranked cities with a population over 65K. Certainly, the cities named are not the most desirable for those with wealth.

I guess we're thinking more along the lines of places like the Palos Verdes Peninsula towns, Hope Ranch outside of Santa Barbara, Bradbury, San Marino, Hidden Hills, etc, for more desirable places for the wealthy?

Perhaps these are places with less intrusive government and more space?

If you have money, why the hell would you live in any of these three booooooooring cities? I mean, you have so many other options like Laguna Beach or Newport... yet you choose MISSION VIEJO!?

geeez.

Not everybody has excitement on their agenda.

I, for one, am boredom on a stick.

If I had all the money in the world, I would most likely still live in my slice of the Southland, just the nicest and most private I could obtain. Perhaps would have a vacation house somewhere for change of scenery but why if you already have all the scenery and escape you could possibly want?

Also, NB and LB, while lovely places, have issues of their own which may not make them the most desirable places for wealth. Sometimes less assuming places can be best--hiding in plain sight is fun.

And Yorba Linda, for example, is very nice and very unassuming. A definite hiding place.

Yeah.......I think the "eccentric millionaire" approach is fun. YL is not bad for that, but places like La Habra and Whittier (or the SGV) are even better, in that people there are either lost or they aren't.

I love the stories of rich people that still drive their old cars and live in downscale neighborhoods compared to their ability to finance a house.

No doubt there are people in Santa Ana that are worth millions--and not just in Floral Park, either.

Looking at Redondo Beach in LA County, most would prefer Manhattan Beach, then Hermosa, Redondo wouldn't be first on the list.

Not many would pick Laguna Niguel over Newport Beach if on has the money to buy in the right place.

Mission Viejo - meh.

It has to do with renting.

People with money do choose Newport over Mission Viejo. Homeowners in Newport are wealthier than those in Mission Viejo. The key word: HOMEOWNERS. Cities like Yorba Linda and MV have inflated rankings because they limit renting in their cities. Any city that has almost exclusively homeowners is going to rank above other cities that have mixed housing options.

It doesn’t mean rich people prefer Yorba Linda. It does however mean that Yorba Linda likely doesn’t have many renters.
