My family and I want to move to Oregon from California. I have heard from various people that there are just no jobs in Oregon whatsoever and when you do find one, it's gonna be minimum wage. Is this true? If it helps any: I have been working in an industrial plant for almost two years now and have extensive training with cranes, air-compressor type paint guns, forklifts, all types of mechanical tools, etc. My wife works retail (although she may just be able to transfer to a Ross in Oregon).

There are jobs but not many. It's like a lottery up here, especially if you're a Californian. It's pretty much a 'who you know' game and many towns like to keep everything 'local'. If you get a job, it's best to keep it because it could be awhile before you can find another. Many of the jobs that are offered require certification/a degree/2-5 years experience, etc. which I find weird in the smaller towns.

Like anywhere if you are a hard worker and apply yourself to making a business thrive, there is work for anyone. Grants Pass is building a new Ross as I type, it is due to open this Summer.
There are lots of blue collar positions to those that work hard and are not just into picking up a paycheck every week as some kind of entitlement.

It depends on who you are and a little of who you know. When I had employees I did not care if they were known, but do they work and have a good attitude towards the business they were part of.

To give an example, one guy was told to come to work with a belt on. I told him everyday for a week, I was tired of seeing his underwear and he came real close to going head over heals off an extension ladder when he stepped on his pant leg. At the end of the week he was sent packing as he tripped on his pants getting out of his car. He was hired because of a referall from his mother who issues permits for construction. That's the only reason I gave him a week to get it together. (Just got a permit from her today, she fortunately gets it).
I saw him at the memorial day parade in town with a belt on, and a new baby in the stroller, and he found another job. I think my mission was to make good workers for other companys. Thats your competition, think your up to it?

I am a home health aid in Fresno,California with a very good attitude, and am a very hard worker who always does more than what's required of me.I don't like it here at all because of the rude, inconsiderate, unfriendly people here.My father and stepmother moved to Grants Pass 5 years ago.My oldest stepbrother was hired at the local market and gas station there and Just recently helped get my younger brother who moved there from Southern California get a Job at the local gas station.I have high regards and respect for land and nature and believe in being friendly to other's as they are with me.I don't have an I'm better attitude or the know it all attitude either.I noticed a big difference in the friendliness of Grants Pass residents compared to where I live.People that never met me or saw me before held the door open and say good morning .Out here the only time anyone says good morning is if they know me.People here let the door close in other's faces practically.I came up for a visit to see my family and really Loved the environment there.I would really like to relocate there to have my wife and raise my Son in a better environment.Being a home health aide; I work in the medical field and was wondering if being Californian would make it difficult for me to get a job even though Grants Pass has alot of elderly and retirees there and not knowing anyone in the medical field there.

For people who have job skills, it is easier. I suspect that the original OP didn't have too much trouble finding a job.

For people with weaker job skills, there are thousands of unskilled people trying to get those home care worker store clerk jobs. There seem to be a lot of those type of jobs, but not necessarily job vacancies. People who have unskilled jobs aren't so quick to quit because it can be difficult to find another job.

Several of the fast food places in my area have up their help wanted jobs, but those jobs are part time. 2 hours for the lunch rush or a separate shift, perhaps 3 hours, for the dinner shift. They might hire you for both shifts but you can't stay and work the hours in between.

I'm sure how true it is that there are thousands of people trying to get home care worker and store jobs. A friend of mine who owns a home health agency in Eugene tells me that she's always hiring and was doing so even during The Great Recession of several years ago.

Call one of the several agencies that handle eldercare in the Grants Pass area for a better feel on the local job situation. They'll probably be happy to talk with you.

Too late to edit -- meant to type "I'm not sure how true it is that there are thousands of people trying to get ..."

Eldercare seems like a good field to be in right now.

Thank you so much and sounds great Oregonwoodsmoke and Metlakatla!!! I really appreciate your replies!!As for fast food; I haven't done so in awhile. But I would be competent to perform the necessary job skills required.Agreed; It is very wise to hang onto any job who hires.I have been employed in the health care field Since 1993 and have many skills which I have learned well over the years.Currently I work for Interim healthcare for Veterans. While on Vacation in GP, I noticed an interim in GP.So prior to the 4th of July I completed an online application with the GP office because I noticed they advertised a part time home care aide. They mentione if my resume met there rquirements; They would contact me to scedule an appointment with them. So; I am waiting patiently.I am also going to apply with The Oregon Department of Human services and get on their registry to send my name and years of skills and experiences there hoping that I will be contacted for a job from any employers seeking to hire home care aides. If not; I will head further North to Eugene and talk to the Home Health agency Managers/Supervisors there.Thank you both for informing me of some possiblities there. If the shoe was on the other foot; I would be more than happy with trying to help you out as well.Very kind of you both!!! Thank You so much again.Sean.

I don't like to see underwear hanging out either.I always wear a belt tightly enough around my waist to keep My pants at waist level.I also dress in a respectable manner as well.In my free time I enjoy fishing especially for Salmon,Steelhead, and Trout.I also enjoy riding dirtbikes, and radio controlled hobbies.

I really like the fact of who I am as a person. Not who I know.Sadly here in California nowadays is who you know not who you are and what you know like it used to be.There are other home health workers here who fill in for me when I go on vacation. When I return; I find out from my clients whom feel very happy and comfortable with me that my fill ins for my clients while I am gone; try to steal my jobs away by asking the clients to hire them instead of me.That is another thing I don't like herebecause I myself have never tried to take what is supposed to be somebody else's causing them to lose their job they worked so hard to get. Also; there is way too much cut throating and backstabbing from co-workers here and trouble maker's who like to worry so much about what another is or isn't doing. How much are they getting done themselves by focusing so much attention on other's How productive of an employee are they themselves if they have that much time to focus on the other's? These aren't manager or supervisor co workers either.I am aware this happens everywhere but not as much in some places as other's.They also like to place blame for their mistakes on other's not wanting to do the right thing by admitting their mistakes and taking the necessary corrective actions so they don't repeat their mistakes, apologize for their mistakes explains to manager/Supervisor that it won't happen again as I feel they Should because that is what I have done when I made mistakes at times.Just many other reason's besides the rudeness here that I am tired of being here and wanting to relocate where folks are so much nicer such as Oregon.I don't believe in treating co- worker's in t the way I have been treated.I firmly believe in treating co worker's kndly hoping to receive the same kindness and team work which I extend to them.
