Please post your idea of where in Oregon this "place" might be:

green (literal, as in tree's and grass)
clean country living
yet, not too far from shopping (Im not a hobby-shopper, but I do need food and school clothes... and art supplies)
not wet (rain) all the time. Horses cant take it.
little to no snow
clean air
family values
no (or limited) gangs, drugs, crime, etc. (not so worried about getting robbed, but more the influence on kids.)
Things to do for a family (bike riding, river fishing, etc. we dont look for big crowded events, more into us and our own goofy fun, but we do like to eat out and go to movies)
Horse friendly area
a big willow tree overlooking a brook would be a plus
as would be an old oak with a tire swing. and even a dock to sit on and dangle our feet over, and look for tadpoles.(These are added to help describe "me" I guess.)
and finally...
Good, up to date, safe schools. (safety is number 1. Fences, check-in, locked doors, etc.)

Any ideas? Or am I looking for something only available in books and movies?

Not in Oregon, Mom. Perhaps not even on this planet. Not wet and no snow don't go together anywhere in Oregon. If you get far enough out for clean country living, you pretty much have to give up shopping. Our whole society is pretty child hostile, as demonstrated by your desire for prison guards at the school gates.

What you *can* find is hill ground that is well enough drained your horses won't get hoof rot, creeks and rivers within reasonable driving distance, a fairly low crime rate, a decent house, and schools where people don't worry much about child safety. You can find this in any rural area in Western Oregon that is not immediately on the coast.

What about along Hwy 42 from South Coos Bay to The Green District. Horses, hills, and country life.

So, you have some sort of problem, or what??? Larry, what scares you that I want locked doors at my childs school? Anybody who doesnt think a parent has the right to make sure the schools are as safe as can be must live under a rock. Anyone who thinks anyone off the street should be able to walk in a bathroom door of an elementary school where a 5 year old might be in there alone is pure idiot.

Try Tillamook.

Try Salem. I bought a very nice show quality QH from a trainer there. She had a very nice place. It does have fog and rain. No where in Oregon is perfect. It is what it is.

If some sick person wants to get to a kid, a fence isn't going to stop them.
It won't do any good to lock the kids up. Life is bit slower paced in some of these towns. It's like going back in time. You really have to drive around Oregon to find your spot. No one can really tell you what you want to hear.

I think it depends more on the geology than the geography. Horses just can't stand soggy feet. You have to have lounging areas for them where their hooves will dry. Most of Southern Oregon is pretty well drained, if you stay off of black clay formations and out of river bottom and swamps. Northern Oregon is wetter, so you have to keep to the uplands to have a healthy horse.

The exception to this is the coast. If you can get your horse to the beach and ride it in the surf, the salt water will toughen and dry the hoof. Horses that exercise on the beach have wonderful hooves.

Southern Oregon for minimal rain, jerome prairie, Jump off joe creek, Rogue river (west evans creek area). Basicall look for areas around creeks. In Grant Pass, Merlin, Hugo, Sunny Valley, Shady cove, etc...

Tillamook came to mind, but not much shopping and where doesn't it rain a lot on the coast.

I like good restaurants - that in itself would keep me from living there. But I sure enjoy the drive down there. Its green alright.
