And that is why people probably just smiled and were nice in return - because it is the complainers that annoy most people.
When I hear a complaint (often about pumping gas, the speed limit, the weather, etc), it's usually coming from someone with out-of-state plates and since I live in a "border" city, the plates are most often California plates. That is how the stereotypes start - because you don't notice the plates of people who are nice in return, only the complainers.
