I need help getting the F out of this state. I was born and raised here, but I never once voted for these morons running the state.

I might consider relocating to Shasta county where they have a gun loving, liberty honoring Sheriff running the county, but even then the CHP still have free reign to levy their hidden taxes on the unsuspecting masses. Is Oregon as oppressive as California? Has it been Californicized beyond recognition. I guess I could ask my wife's family members that have lived there for decades, but I want unbiased opinions. Not opinions of those who want us to move there.

I don't like being lumped into your neat little "All Californians suck" mantra, so let me ask you all a few things. Are young families welcome in your state? Or must we move to Montana for a month, then move to Oregon before we're welcomed there? I'm blue collar and I just want to raise my children in an area with similar values...it is sounding more and more like Oregon's values are less than that of California's. As far as people go. You may not like the yuppie's moving to your state, but we don't like them either and are glad to get rid of them.

Perhaps in the future you should think more of the people rather than stereotypes. If all Californians were the same, GW Bush wouldn't have gotten 7 million votes in 2004...Kerry got 8 million. Nice democracy we have...7 million people don't matter on election day every 4 years. My point is, try complaining about the PEOPLE you've seen not the place they came from. I love California the state, but I have come to despise the fact that LA and the Bay Area overrule the rest of us. I am not Rep or Dem so don't confuse me with that crap. I prefer common sense and neither party seems to kniw what that is.

Perhaps I will seek out Washington State....its a little wetter than I'd like and it appears to have more serial killers per capita than I am comfortable with, but what the hell.

I would just not live in the valley. The valley (Portland to Eugene) tends to be more liberal and democratic. The rest of the state is red.

I think you'd like Southern Oregon, but not Ashland. It's pretty liberal.

First off, I'd like to hear more about this hidden CHP tax you mention, and secondly, have you considered Idaho?

The hidden tax is any and every ticket you get...such as, speeding tickets, talking on your cell phone tickets, seat belt tickets, repair tickets, pretty much all moving violations. Some of these you might disagree with, but others are just absurd. What business does the government have punishing me for not wearing a seat belt or talking on a cell phone? NONE. If I cause an accident or injure myself, I pay the price. In any case, it's just one of things that irritates me about the billion or so laws we have to adhere to in California.

I have considered Idaho, but I'd be 1000 miles away from anyone I know. We at least have family in Oregon and I grew up near Redding which is only a few hours south of the border. I want out of CA, but I still want to be close. lol I just wish these Oregonians would let me have my cake and eat it too!

That's basically what I was thinking. Rogue River area, but what's it like. Am I going to get run out of town because of where I am from? lol Burned at the stake?

And why are prices higher than northern california? I was sort of shocked by that. Isn't Oregon rural???

No you won't be run out of town.

Oregon is expensive due to our STICT zoning laws called urban growth boundaries. If you are looking to do whatever you want, whenever you want, then I would think you'll need to be as far away from people as possible.

Prices are higher because of property taxes and also because land in OR is at a permium due to very very strict zoning laws, and much of the state beeing owned by BLM. Prices are higher because most people want to live where there are trees and not in the high desert half of the state. Prices are higher because of fradulent lending practices and "flippers" buying up all the available real estate, throwing on a coat of paint and calling it a remodel.

Try Cave Junction. Thanks to budget cuts they've only got one state trooper to patrol the entire area of rural southern Josephine county. Nice and lawless, just how you like it. Of course you'll have to contend with a high volume of meth addicts and unwashed, toothless wonders, but you won't have to worry about the cops coming to your aid when your house gets robbed or vandalised, or when you crash without your seatbelt and need to go to the hospital!

Have a look at Medford. It's close enough to your friends and family and a bit more 'red' than Ashland.

Naturally, that is not what I meant. Typical response though. I promote common sense. Common sense does not mean, doing whatever I want whenever I want. lol

Strict zoning laws for urban growth? Are those in place to keep Oregon's natural beauty in tact or for some other reason?

What is the state government like? Is it a bloated bureaucracy whose only function is to figure out more ways of taxing the people? Or are your representatives working tirelessly to protect your personal rights and liberties?

I suppose I should rephrase what I am looking for. I am looking for an escape from the oppressive over-regulation of California. I know Oregon is headed in the same direction politically as California, but my hope is that it is about 10-20 years behind. I figure by the time it catches up I will be about ready to retire and will be more concerned about my Social Security income than personal liberty.

I like the people of California and the people of Oregon, please do not mistake what I say as a personal attack. Liberal, Conservative, or whatever; good people come from all walks of life.

LOL!! Of course, let's take it too the extreme. Did I really give off that vibe? I guess I deserve it for not being exact in what I meant...I typed "in general" and am receiving responses "in general". Thanks for the info on pricing...it's good to know the housing prices will soon clear up some of those prices. Sorry to have bothered you folks. Time for me to go crawl back into my branch dravidian-like compound. (sigh)
