The area was'nt scary or anything it just looked alot like San Bernardino. I wish I would have had a chance to see the rest of Eugene. I hear it's a cool town.

Salem has bad and good areas same as schools, The gang activity remains in the area I live but it depend on what side of the city you are in, I have lived in both cities and enjoy salem more because it is closer to Portland, Salem to Portland is where everything is at Oregon (shopping, Jobs, Concerts & 45 min to the coast). I would suggest salem, Leave the college town for the students. We also have the best Mexican restaurants in Oregon!

Heh. Salem - It's a Quicker Escape to Portland isn't exactly a ringing endorsement.

Eugene is the sort of place where a human might actually want to live. The university brings in some arts and culture that you wouldn't otherwise find in a smaller city. Salem by comparison is lifeless and features such stunning attractions as a prison and the monument to bad traffic, blandness, and consumer junk that is Lancaster. But it is true that if you want to go to Portland, Salem is closer.

I was in Salem with one of my co-workers for a meeting and we got coffee at the Starbucks on Lancaster (near Market, I believe). He called the area "visually rich."

I thought that was an apt description of the Lancaster strip!

Not a term I would have used, but interesting. It is a congested older business area. South Commercial is newer but just as "Visually Rich".
