In the 1970's Rosemont was an upper class neighborhood. It was one of the premier places to live in Orlando, kind of like Tuskawilla and Sweetwater Oaks.

I frickin love orlando also. I have lived there for about 2 months, last year and Im headed there for good very soon. The people there, compared to NY, are extremely friendly, it's almost scary. At least in winter park area. The weather is close to heavenly to me, being that here in NY it's rainy a very good part of the time. Plus I love the flatness of orlando/florida landscape. Not to mention the wildlife. I love florida!!!!!

Oh and the best is, that there are so many good looking latin women. o lala

1. Insurance costs. That goes for car (4th MOST expensive in the US) and home (outrageously high, that is IF you can even get coverage).

2. Lack of high paying jobs. FL is a "Service-oriented" economy, based on toursim, and these jobs pay minimum wage ($6.75/h right now).

3. Lack of infra-structure (ie. not enough roads, no mass transit system in Orlando, schools overcrowded, not enough cops, jail is full with 5,000 inmates at 33rd street jail and they are not opening up more space quickly enough, etc).

4. Illegal aliens driving with no insurance and NO ID.

5. Staring Oct 1, car insurance will NOT be required in FL and the good drivers will be forced to buy massive amounts of "uninsured motorist coverrage" which will cost a fortune.

6. Hurricanes.

7. Tornadoes! FL is #1 in most tornadoes per sq foot.

8. Lightning. FL #1 most lightining in the world. That is why Thomas Edison had a home in FL while working on invention of light bulb.

9. Horribly humid/muggy weather. Summer that lasts 9 months out of the year.

10. Home prices are through the roof and no one can afford them, so the real estate market is way too risky to buy.

11. Rent prices in non-crack infested neighborhoods starts at $1,000 for a 1/1 studio.

12. Traffic. They don't have enough roads and because home rpices are so high, epopel ahve to commute 60+ miles each way a day just so they afford a home.

13. Property taxes are throyugh the roof.

14. because there are SO many people moving to FL from up north, the competetion for jobs is brutal and comapnies are paying people less and less, as the supply of workers is much greater than the availability for jobs.

15. Overcrowded colleges.

16. People are transient in FL. People come down and they leave after a while.

17. Unfriendly and rude people in traffic and in public places. People are aggressive because it is so hot and because they are from NJ, CT, MA, NY.

These are just SOME of the problems facing Orlando.
$1000 for a studio in a crack infested neighborhood? You're off your rocker. The apartment comples I live in is near SeaWorld, a relatively safe area and teh have one bedrooms for $850 and that includes utilities

So because I'm from CT that makes me rude, unfriendly, and aggressive? All my friends tell me that I couldn't be more polite then I am now, and fellow nutmeggers who live down here are friendly.

Also Orlando is not as transient as Vegas. If any part of the area is transient its Kissimmee

The job market works out like this, not enough people for the jobs even if they are low paying. There are tons of job opps in Orlando no matter what field you're in.

Summer doesn't last 9 months. Maybe 6 at the most

Florida is number 1 for lightning in America not the world. Get your facts straight

Orlando because of its inland location is really the only city in Florida that will never be totally destroyed by a Hurricane, because those storms travel abnout 60 miles inland before reaching Orlando so they are weak.

Florida may be number 1 for tornadoes but most of them cause little if any damage

As far as crime goes, most people who know the city as well as I do know where and where not to go. I love living near SeaWorld, I get a free fireworks show every night, close to the highways and schools and low crime, whats not to like?

As far as neighborhoods go Bay Hill, Dr Phillips, Hunters Creek, Williamsburg, and Hunters Creek are all great neighborhoods, Williamsburg being the most affordable and closest to attractions.

Orlando IS a good place to live, you're just a whiner

Great post Davie.

I've lived in Orlando for a few years now and have never once been affected by any crime. Of course, everyone knows crime is out there, as in any other major city. There are so many nice areas in Orlando and the surrounding communities. Any reasonable person learns the good and bad in any city before they move there. If they don't, shame on them. It's also a shame that the same person continues to scare potential residents away with his crime rants. I think he enjoys it and does it for fun.

Everyone moving to Orlando has a different set of circumstances with regard to housing, income and employment. Lumping everyone into the same category is unproductive and meaningless. Potential residents- do your homework but know that Orlando can be a decent place to work and play.

In spite of all that does go on here i believe many parts of town are friendly and family oriented. The Conway area is a great example. A small hometown kinda look, giant oak trees, big lakes. Its perfect. Winter Park and Maitland are good options too.

It is a beautiful city, I have pics to prove that

Thats me and My sister at Lake Eola...hmm Orlando doesn't look half bad does it?

This shot isnt perfect as I took it from a LYnx Bus on I-4 but you can cleary see with the construction that Orlando is growing.

I may never leave this town. But there are personal reasons. All my friends are here. If you live in a place where all your friends and family are yo udon't want to leave no matter how bad that place is. My dad feels that way about his precious Connecticut and wants to move back when I graduate high school next year. But lving in Orlando or any city is what you make of it. If you choose to whine like Nirvana Guy of course you'll hate wherever you live. If you take the bad with the good like ido, it isn't so bad

If she is moving here for a specific reason like UCF then:

Oviedo, Winter Springs then secondarily Waterford and Avalon Park.

To work at the theme parks:

DR Phillips, Hunters Creek, Winter Garden/Windermere.

Rollins or to be in the city:

Winter Park, Maitland, College Park, Thornton Park, Baldwin Park, Audubon Park, Conway, Belle Isle.

The northern suburbs are nice too:

Lake Mary, Longwood, Apopka, the Wekiva area, then Altamonte is hit or miss.

Lake Nona is also a nice area as previously mentioned in the SE part of the city/metro area.

For the most part I would help her to avoid areas of Pine Hills, Parramore, Metrowest, Millenia area, SKy Lake/Florida Mall area, Oakridge, Union Park, downtown Kissimmee areas, Azalea Park, Goldenrod, and certain parts of South Chase and Ocoee. There are also bad pockets of Lockhart to avoid.
