People sometimes complain (or mis-characterize would be the better term) that there is nothing to do in Orlando other than theme parks. Well this past weekend I faced another common and growing problem...too many things to do. Friday night caught up with old friends at numerous happy hours throughout downtown. Saw a huge crowd outside the Beacham for what I later found out was a rare club concert by the Killers. Happy Hour was not a good idea because I was unable to attend the 5K in the morning my cousin invited me to run in. Immediately after that was the Veterans day parade which my office mate invited me too. At the same time just down the street was the huge "Orlando Calling" music festival that featured multiple headliners including Bob Seger, Kid Rock, The Killers, The Roots, Kid Cudi, Blake Shelton. On Sunday I headed into work for hours but get caught in traffic for the "Come out With Pride" festival that basically shut down all of Lake Eola. Finished up some work just in time to get to the Dwight Howard Magic All Star game at UCF arena. The event was a defenseless dunkfest with the Old School Magic Players v. New School Magic Players. Their were multiple entertainment acts and the teams were coached by Boxing World Champion Floyd Money Mayweather and rap/pop icon Lil Wayne. The whole event ended up being an Orlando love-fest with Penny Hardaway getting the largest ovation of the night. Immediately after came out and enjoyed a little time at Light Up UCF and finally ended the weekend. What a boring place to live? Maybe one of these weekends I'll just go to the themeparks.

That's great! However I think posts you're referring to pointed out that the city's offerings were no different from any other city this size in terms of things to do and in many cases still didn't match up. I don't think anyone insinuated that Orlando was a ghost town.

Too bad I missed The Killers. We had the Pacquiao fight Saturday. Sunday, went to see "Festivals of Speed" at the Ritz. In retrospect, would have traded the 2 events to see Brandon Flowers though. I should check out Beacham one of these days,,,

Kyle I don't believe you have ever insinuated such as you are reasonable. But they're have been post in the past that insinuate there is "nothing" to do in Orlando other than theme parks.

At Nixau, make sure to check the event type at Beacham before going. It's great live music venue, but most of the time it's nightclub that caters to teens.

I have a "tweenager" and they have "Airborne Toxic Event" this Nov. so i'm thinking of checking it out by then. How is this place for a tweenager? Good? Bad? Thanks so much!

Most of the time when I drive by the shows that are catered towards "tweens" I see an equal number of tweens and parents. At the risk of making your kids look uncool, I would go along with them the first time, particularly if the show is later in the evening. No real danger as far as the area, but downtown is generally catered to the crowds much older than tweens. Parental supervision wouldn't be a bad idea.

Great post Crane's Rooster! It is a common misconception that Orlando has nothing to offer but theme parks. I, like you, never seem to run out of things to do in Orlando. This weekend was packed full of great events for Central Florida residents. I know not all weekends are like this but my friends and I always find something to do even if it just going to Park Ave. for happy hour drinks and dinner. Orlando has so much to offer if you are willing to do a bit of research to find out about different events.
