Out of 67 school districts Seminole County was tops in Central Florida, placing 7th... just ahead of Brevard County which was 8th. Orange County and Volusia County tied for 34th, Osceola County was 38th and Lake County is 44th.

I don't think looking at school districts by county is the best way to look at them. There will be good and bad schools in any county. For example, Orange County contains Pine Hills Elementary, yet also includes Blankner and Winter Park High.

Blankner and Winter Park High are exceptions versus the average, so I would say a district rating is a valuable tool when assessing where to live with children.

The superintendent of Seminole schools is coming out and criticizing the ranking methodology even though his district benefited from it. Too one-dimensional just to look at FCAT scores alone.

I agree with idr591. Orange is way too big to make such a sweeping judgement.

I still think it would be foolish to look at a county rating instead of the actual district that you are living in. There are plenty of C rated schools in Seminole County. If you live in a district with one of those schools, it doesn't suck any less just because it is in Seminole County.

Umm, Orlando's population is around 240,000 and the entire county just went over 1,000,000.....that's not very big by metro area standrards.

The point I'm making is when people relocate from elsewhere they don't know school districts from squat. Having county scores could help narrow one's search. In terms of saying there are plenty of "C" schools in Seminole County, not to so much. Perhaps you failed to grasp the concept that the overall score was an average against all of the schools in the county therefore plenty of "C"s would not equal an overall grade of "A".

And we are judging Orange County, with a population of 1 million. There are a wide range of schools within the district. I don't think a parent should steer clear of Winter Park High School because Evans High School got a bad grade.

Good point. Someone might miss a gem of a place like Winter Park because they decided on Seminole county because of this study
