I would say April. It is cold off and on through at least late February, and all of March is crowded with spring-breakers since different states do it different times during March. By May, some schools have let out for Summer. April is a warm month, yet not overly hot or humid, and you'll avoid the biggest crowds.

Love it here in October. end of September and November (early) are pretty good too. Low crowds, decent weather
April after spring vacation is nice too.

If you are going to the theme parks, check the crowd calendar at TouringPlans.com. It isn't free, but it is cheap compared to the other travel expenses.

Every year that goes by summer becomes less of a peak season. It gets busy for sure but people are going more at different times throughout the year when it's not 100 degrees in the shade.

That's not peak season. It's Summer Season in June and July, and Value season in August. Either way, it is too hot in the summer to go to the parks if you can go another time.
