Not sure how much is for convenience and how much it is because you can't afford to pay for a parking space at an apartment and then at work.

Both play a big part. When it comes to work a lot of people will take public transportation or the company shuttle to avoid paying for a parking garage while at work. When it comes to daily life, most people will drive to the area they want to hang out and walk everywhere from there or just walk out their door and hang out if they live in an interesting district. It takes me on average 10-30 minutes to find parking, so when I go to... say North Beach (Little Italy), I will just park once and walk around everywhere until I'm ready to go home. It wouldn't make sense for me to get back in my car and potentially drive circles for 30 minutes, when it would be a 5 minute walk to my next stop with interesting things to see along the way. I also think urban cities promote more health conscious decisions such as biking, farmers markets, organic foods, jogging etc. In cities like Houston and Orlando, it's normal to drive to the grocery store, then drive to a restaurant, then drive to a mall, then drive to a lounge etc. In urban cities, it's not normal primarily because it isn't convenient, regardless of having to pay for street or garage parking, it's just more of a hassle driving around circles looking for a space, when you could walk and be there faster.

One would think with the year round pleasant weather and sunshine, Floridians would be fit, tan, cute, and perky....not fat, obese and diabetic.

I know right lol. I was in much better shape when I lived in Florida because of the weather. It was always pleasant going for runs, biking, swimming, playing catch in a park. Here in San Francisco, I do a lot of walking, but not much in terms of getting my heart pumping because of the cool weather.

Um, the healthiest option is the perimeter of your local supermarket or food that you can grow/raise yourself.

It's not the restaurant industry's fault.

That's what I was thinking as I clicked on the thread. At least that's how it was when I lived in California...with the weather, people have no excuse to be fat. Also, although many people in Florida may be fat, our cities have access to lots of outdoor activities. That's more than you can say for a lot of other areas.

I was surprised to see Miami on the "worst" list given all of the flashiness in that area.

You'd be surprised. People here are just so lazy.
My office is filled with obese people who eat out virtually every day, and take offense when I don't partake in their outings because I brought my own lunch.
Also, I find it surprising that so many of my colleagues have no idea what the West Orange Trail is.

Fast food and junk food places have made me sick. I tried to do an experiment only eating fast food places every day for month, i felt like I was dying I kid you not at the end of the month. I need to get back to eating healthy. Drinking too much soda and eating at fast food places for a month made me super sick like that Fast Food Nation documentary proved. I didn't gain that much weight but I felt sick for days. Organic food and healthy food like fruits and veggies are the way to go.

You're preaching to the choir. However the economics dictates to many eating at the plethora of fast food restaurants where one can eat off the dollar menu, versus buying a bunch of Broccoli for $3.99 as just one example. It's been pretty well documented that Orlando residents in general aren't exactly well off, and from that one can see a correlation between that reality and the study's findings.
