I'm potentially moving to Orlando in the next 2-3 weeks, and need to get an idea of what I'll be looking at as far as my living situation goes. I'm a young professional moving to the Millenia area. I'd like a single bedroom or studio in the $900-1200/mo range, if that's not realistic let me know so I can adjust my needs. If there are any areas around with good access to restaurants, bars, etc.; that would be a plus, but I'd rather be close to my office which is right near the Turnpike/I-4 intersection.

There seem to be a lot of apartments in the area but they seem to be hit-or-miss so I want to make sure I don't make a mistake (I've heard some areas are prone to crime/break-ins). If anyone with experience in this area has recommendations please let me know. Thanks.

Millenia is a great area to shop, eat or buy a luxury car, but it is very close to a really bad ghetto and some of the trash spills over into the apartments around Millenia. One of my friends moved out of her apartment because there were a lot of break ins to her neighbors and didn't feel safe despite it being gated. If you do choose Millenia, rent a condo from an owner rather than an apartment.

Would Dr. Phillips be a safer bet? I'd like to avoid any bad areas. I'd honestly probably be willing to pay closer to $1500-1600/mo for a place I know is in a nice area. Then once I live there for a year I can re-evaluate my options.

Dr. Phillips is a great area, really safe, whole foods, trader joes, publix, fresh market all withing minutes of each other. Lots of restaurants within and nearby. You can look into the Rialto Apartments on Sand Lake which look really nice from the outside anyways. There are other options too from private owners.

I moved here (Dr Phillips) from San Francisco and really like it. A cool part of Orlando for young professionals is the area around Winter Park, Ivanhoe Village, Lake Eola, Baldwin Park, Thornton Park. Dr. Phillips is more upper middle class families, but I enjoy it and I'm 29 years old and my gf is 23. However, the areas I mentioned I think are more what most young professionals desire.

Rialto might be a little out of my budget (was just looking there), but I'll take a look around at other options. Thanks

I edited my post to add a bit more information, but yeah your best bet is to rent from condos/townhomes as they are often bettee value and you'll likely have better neighbors.

should be able to find a 2-3 BR place somewhere in Dr Phillips around $1600 I guess, but as BMW pointed out, it is more young professional families, rather than singles/couples. $1600 would definitely get a 1BR place in nice part of downtown. If you have to work in Milennia, either place would be a reasonable commute, DP would be closer though.

The areas nearby and esp east of Millennia are highly ghetto

You might look over near SeaWorld- lots of new complexes over there in your budget: Integra Cove, Sea Isle, Altis at Sand Lake, The Courtney.. just to name a few. It's still an easy commute to Millenia and Dr. Phillips is nearby.
