Agreed about the traffic lights, they do not make any sense. Very frustrating that a lot of them only seem to be there in order to CAUSE traffic, not alleviate it
An old poster from a while back that lived locally for decades (Spring Hillian) said it was built that way in order to go around those ****ty apartments under it. I still don't think it makes sense. I can think of a dozen better designs than this, none of which would include that ridiculous X crossing of cars going East and cars going West coming from opposite directions.

This never gets old.

I read that the I-4/408 interchange was built that way because the intention was to install toll booths there. It never happened. I swore I saw that in a Wikipedia article years ago, but perhaps it was edited.

Regardless of what we think of it today, apparently that interchange was state of the art when it was created. It's the age old question of do we build for what we have now, or do we build for what we might have 30 years from now? It looks like the chose the former.

"The 408 connection to I-4 remains a mess, with the trumpet-like design that was state of the art when it opened in 1973, but is now overwhelmed by the crush of traffic. The interchange was never meant to handle the 80,000 vehicles that now crawl along it each workday."
