I know that most of Orlando isn't the safest, but the fact that on the forums it is one of the top 5 worst of the worst is what started to freak me out. I cannot find/afford anything else on my budget, so I will make the best out of the situation. I was looking in 32809, 32810, 32822, and those neighborhoods are not much safer than 32839....are they?

I would also get to know the neighbors. That doesn't mean you have to be their best friend, but get to know them. Know who their kids are, who their regular invited guests are. Make sure that they know you. Encourage them to call the police if they see someone hanging around who doesn't belong there, or if something jsut doesn't seem right. The best way to live in a safe neighborhood is to be proactive and work with your neighbors to make it safe.

Don't go by what you read on this forum. People over exaggerate. Once you live here you'll know what I'm talking about. I know ppl from Chicago and Philly and they say that our bad areas don't compare to the bad areas in those cities.

I want to become active with the hoa and I know that this complex requires background checks for all owners and renters, or so they said. I do not believe it is gated at this time, but maybe we can get the hoa to install a gate system. Its one of the smaller complexes in that area, so who knows, maybe it will have more of a community feel to it.

I can't speak for Chicago, but I lived in a bedroom area of Philly, and the bad areas here are just as bad as the bad areas there--they just aren't as old so there aren't rowhouses or high rise tenaments so it might not look as bad. Looks can be deceiving.

I think putting bars on your windows is a bit over the top. For one it will make it look like your hiding nice things in there making robbers want to break in even more, and it will make you look paranoid which makes you more vulnerable to crime. I never see windows with bars. I don't recommend it.

How about the crime reports as reported by the police to the news media. Or are we not to believe the police?
