This is funny....I grew up all over that yellow section of Illinios....and when I moved up to Rockford, Ill, I was told I had a southern accent......lmao.
I guess because I speak Chinese and Spanish,I have people tell me I have a Chinese accent on the phone, somtimes I have spanish too.So it's a combo of 3 things

I live north of that zone in the "real" accentless zone: The upper Midwest south of Minnesota, eh.
Deep voice, especially in the morning. My wife calls it my bear voice, and it's the same one my father had. When talking on a phone before Noon I have to very careful or no one can understand me. All they hear is rumble rumble rumble.
I do have a wide range when singing. I can still sing songs like Sherry Baby (NOT in the morning), and hit the low notes in Papa Oom Mow Mow by the Beach Boys. When I was in choir I could sing soprano until my voice changed.
My voice is deep...not really an accent...and I have been told I talk fast....and even though I grew up in Texas, I was born in Nebraska and spent the first years of my life there near the "accentless zone" so maybe that has something to do with it too. I know when I am tired or have had too much to drink, I can start sounding like I have a little bit of a southern drawl but not much really. If I had a dollar for every time someone said to me..."you live in Texas...you don't sound like you have a Texas/southern accent".......that's because we all don't have accents...
Location: Moved to town. Miss 'my' woods and critters.

Hmmm, I have no accent at all...Plain old Midwest with sometimes a teeny tiny lil bit of the south thrown in...at times....But when I am around a true Southerner, I catch myself emulating their speech patterns...have to watch that....
I have been told that I have a good telephone voice. I once had to make a public announcement, which was not usually my job and had a very important person come up to me and tell me how good I sounded on the public address system. I guess you might say musical. I have been singing solos in church since I was five years old.
I have a slightly Southern accent and for those of you who do not realize this and I am not pointing to anyone particular; there is no one who doesn't have some kind of accent. I have delt with some really funny ones. As practiced as the newscasters are I can still pick out a few words that locate that person, like the word "out" and "house" for Ohio and upper Virginia some of those people in the Midwest really say the word "doll" funny.
I have a midwest accent, well it really isn't an accent now is it? Listen to all your newscasters on the news tonight, that's how I talk, maybe with a little ghetto words thrown in every now and then. And don't pi$$ me off, (which is really hard to do) ~ i go into full swing ghetto mode! If I get super mad, I just start talking in another language!
I hate the sound of my voice on a recording, I think I sound nasaly too! I must have a decent voice though cause I've done alot of voiceover work
I'm not picking up the southern accent yet - maybe a few words here and there. But I still can walk into a place down here, open my mouth and talk and have everyone stop what their doing to look and see who's talking!!
When I was a kid, I used to talk fast, but I learned to slow down so people can understand what I'm saying. Now I'm 51 and I talk too s..l..o..wwww... s...o..m..e..t..i..m..e..s to make thing clear. As for the accent, Arizonans don't really have a notable accent like New Yorkers and Chicagoans do.
I do talk politely, but when I sneeze... it's a different story, I'm one of those very loud sneezers and on many occasions, things would be quiet in a classroom or a meeting, and I'd let out a big sneeze, enough to probably blow the roof off the building! and startle everybody up!
A gal I was dating 5 years ago also used to give me a hard time about my sneezes, but on the other hand, her sneezes are completely the opposite, whenever she sneezed, it was 4 or 5 very soft and muzzled "atsoop, atsoop, atsoop", she sounded hillarious!

Roof can be a give away
Adding the "s" to Des Moines like you would Des Plaines gets a good chuckle around here. Out pronounced oot is a gimme.
We just got back from Vegas and the bagger at an Albertson's (nice young lady) looked at what we bought and asked if we were on vacation. When I said yes she replied (looking at our stuff) "I didn't think Y'all were from around here." So I told her, "Y'all aren't from around here, either."
BTW, the northern area of that zone (Southern Iowa) is where the drawl starts.
