I'm so old that I remember there was only one phone company, The Bell Telephone Company. When you had a problem you called, a human answered, and a human would show up the same day or early the next to fix the problem.

I remember when I was 4 years old (1944). I got out of the back seat of our brand new Dodge 4-door .....and I went in the house. (the back seat car door swung the opposite way, not like today's) I left the car door open and dad pulled into the garage. CRUSH! The back door was almost torn off.
