I'm so old I remember square dancing on saw dust floors.
When I was in high school, the chaperons for our dances would shake something onto the floor from a shaker can that resembled saw dust and it made the floor a little slicker so our shoes wouldn't drag and we could glide on the floor. (That was in the day when we danced face to face with the opposing hands clasped, the guy's right arm around the girl's waist and the girl's left arm around his shoulder.)
I used to put on a nice dress and little white gloves and go downtown on the bus with my mother.
Reminds me of a story friend of mine told me about her first rock concert, which she attended at Music Hall in Cincinnati, home of the symphony, the ballet, opera, etc.
She showed up at the concert in a skirt and nylons and heels, because that's how she was taught to dress when she went to Music Hall. She sees everyone in jeans and sandals, and wonders ... what the ... ?
