I once worked in an office where they started piping in music at Thanksgiving. Never had music on the rest of the year. We all got so tired of it. No complaints by employees were ever listened to. This was not a retail business, so it's not like they were trying to set a mood for customers. It just turned something that's supposed to be positive into an annoyance. That sux.

My only holiday decor does indeed stay up all year long, but it's so low key that it's hardly noticed -- a couple of jingle bells on my door handle, just 'cause I like the sound, and some small glittery snowflakes hung from the ceiling of my deck, that twist and sparkle in the breeze. I'm giving two gifts this year, both handmade by yours truly.
That said, the stuff that comes out before Hallowe'en makes me want to puke.

Okay, here is my $0.02 on the whole deal:
1. People will shop for presents all year long for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, Christmas, and other religious celebrations.
2. Good ol U.S.A. is a capitalistic country. We all want to make a decent living, right? Right. Therefore sellers of goods know this and will do their utmost in order to entice customers to their place of business.
3. Additional employees are generally hired in order to meet this demand. Therefore spreading the wealth around.
4. The giving of gifts, be they homemade or manufactured somewhere else, is a show of love and/or affection for the recipient(s).
5. This is our modern way of doing a 'good deed' perhaps in lieu of actions that perhaps Jesus would have approved of.
6. Some may choose to decorate their residences earlier than most would deem appropriate due to the climatic changes in their area. You know, freezing temps, ice, snow, howling winds and fear of heights, thus the necessity of requiring the assistance of willing neighbors during the nicer weather conditions.
7. Ah, and then we come to the music, sounds, ear assaulting strains of little furry critters singing redundantly until we are reduced to uttering words that are not appropriate at any time of the year let alone this festive season of giving and love.
8. Perhaps we are all correct in our desires for music, decorations, commercialism, and such to be exercised in a time frame conducive to our acceptance. And then we could just turn our heads, cover our eyes and ears in our attempts to eliminate these yearly assaults.
9. Personally, I think not.
10. I will once again, listen to 'Do You Hear What I Hear', view with delight the displays of others, appreciate their time and trouble, smell with longing the bakery items of pumpkin and pecan pies, take my lists to these buildings overflowing with goods, and perhaps 'find' just that right pair of stockings for an elderly aunt or uncle that keep losing one of their stockings in the laundry.
11. Now, where did I hide my decorations from last year? I know that I put them in a place designated for seasonal activities.
12. Of course, they are hiding behind the leftover birthday, anniversary, and summer decorations. See y'all later. I must attend to my decorating while the weather here in Missouri is considerably warmer than it will be in 3 or 4 weeks! You know, 30s and snowing!!!

I think it's disrespectful to Halloween to crowd it out with Christmas before it's due. Heck, two days before Halloween I went to a local department store to look for some things in particular, and they had already shoved what was left out into the garden section, making room for all the Christmas shelves. They couldn't even hold off for two more days. I was pi$$ed.
However, the Christmas stuff DOES need to come out at some point in November, because people DO start their shopping the day after Thanksgiving.
I don't believe I've noticed Christmas lights anywhere that soon. However, I rather like it when they're left up through Feb, though. After Christmas I look at the pretty lighting as "winter" decorations.

Funny story -- an acquaintance from Saudi Arabia once asked me why so many people here in the US get married in December! When I asked him why he thought that, he mentioned all the colored lights strung up all over the place. Apparently, no proper Arabian wedding celebration is complete without colored lights draped over everything in sight! Hmmmm.
Officially I don’t change holiday decorations more then two weeks before each of the holidays. I have pc screen savers for most of them, and it only takes a minute to point and click.
