Oh and the other thing I've learned is how so many of us have a very unrealistic idea of what it will be like to live in another city--and I think it comes from tv. No matter how much research people do, we still buy into the crazy idea that a city is going to resemble the image we see on tv dramas and sitcoms.

We expect to work as a waitress but afford a big apartment like they have in Friends, or live right on the beach, or find an apartment in a building where your friends with everyone and people walk in and out of each other's apartments all day long. We expect to be able to coast around the beltway in 5 minutes because Mulder and Scully can. Etc. etc. And when it doesn't turn out to actually be that way, we feel gypped.

A lot of people over-idealize their next city--then they move there and discover in a lot of ways it's pretty similar to the city they just left.

Anonymity online lowers inhibitions, like alcohol, and people take the opportunity to be more of who they really are:
more of a know it all
a jerk
a flirt
racist
sadist
enthusiast
religious
more of a teacher
more motherly/fatherly
dramatic
helpful/service oriented
argumentative
more of a clown/jokester
more friendly
loving
etc.
