Online 'Sextortion' of teens is on the rise, according to Federal Authorities challenged with investigating this relatively new type of crime involving sexual extortion or sexual exploitation. With so many cases rising in the judicial system, Federal Authorities and Child Safety Advocates want to educate teens on the dangers of 'Sextortion' and how to stop it.
'Sextortion'--Tips on Preventing it
'Sextortion' is on the rise and difficult to detect, given the nature of how the photo made its way on the internet.
Do Not send any photos of yourself that could later come back to haunt you.
At the first sign of any threats, Authorities must be partnered with. The sooner the intervention, the sooner the offender can be identified and dealt with accordingly.
Trust no one, not even a relative with provocative photos of yourself.
Create a support system that you can rely on if you become a victim of 'Sextortion'.
Just what we need, another BS name invented by the media to scare people. Its getting quite formulaic, add the word 'sex' to any word at all and it sounds 10 times worse! GO!
Give me a break, these teens doing this, and everyone else should already know that things they send to other people can be used against them in the future. Its just they don't care until it actually does come back to haunt them.

The problem is, teens don't have the common sense to understand this. Yes, they may "know" it but they don't have the capacity to truly understand it. There is a huge difference. Think about some of the stuff you did as a teen..... would you do it now? Would you want your kid doing it? Didn't think so.
Teens think they're invincible. They think they're "in love forever". They think "oh, that would never happen to me" or "_____ would never do that to me".
They think it's cute or funny to go around posing for nude or semi nude cell phone pictures or put up photos on the internet. They don't realize how this can and usually will come back to haunt them later on.

Sadly I see this stage carrying on into the older years.
One of the things to keep in mind is that kids who are afraid of their parents are more likely to fall for something like this because they are afraid of their parents. Those of you reading this who like to discipline through fear please re-think your position.
