Jesus isn't in school so it doesn't matter. He has been kicked out of public schools for sometime. And as i said those are personal and can stay in the household.

If it is OK for this student to declare their belief that Jesus is not homophobic it is totally within anothers right to declare their belief that Jesus is homophobic. The school either needs to get smart and structure a dress code or uniform that does not allow this type of expression or it will open itself to an assault of seemingly offensive speech that is perfectly protected.
When I was in high school there was a kid who wore a shirt that said "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve." I confronted him and told him that if he wore it again I would go to the principal (we did have a dress code about 'messaged shirts'.) The next day he hid the shirt under another shirt all day, then revealed it during our English class together. I stood up, left the classroom, and went to the principal's office. While I was speaking with the principal the kid went to hid the shirt in his locker but the principal caught him in the act.

And this is actually why I think a shirt with the opposite message doesn't have a place in the school as well. It's a disruption. Nobody learned anything in English that day. Kids don't have unlimited right to free speech in schools...many lawsuits have established that.

You have to remember that kids are legally obligated to go to school. Their parents may have choices about what school or even to home school, but the kid doesn't. As an adult I have the freedom not to associate with someone who doesn't share my beliefs. Even if that person is my boss, I can quit my job. A kid has to continue to share space with people they wouldn't associate with if they had any choice in the manner. So 'preaching' through messages like this on either side is disruptive, unnecessary, and can even be threatening. To kids trying to build their identities, a shirt that says "God hates gays" contributes to a threatening environment.

So I say no religious or political shirts of any kind.

(Last year the kid from the above story actually contacted me through Facebook and apologized for being a bully. He was very sincere and apologetic and we had a nice discussion. I still didn't friend him through. )

Different schools handle it different ways. My daughter went to one public school where they learned about Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. They assumed they had all the religions covered there and it would be okay to have the kids sing hymns and make religious decorations.

At the school my daughters attend now, they don't learn about any religious traditions. They have a winter party rather than a Christmas party. I actually prefer it that way. If I want to teach my children about religion, then I want to choose what they learn.

I have learned to phrase it better over the years though...I went to the office at the first school my daughter was at and told them I didn't want her participating in any religous programs or projects, and that if I wanted her brainwashed, I would do it at home.

I agree: it's both, or neither. I vote for neither.

Our district bans plain white t-shirts due to gang affiliations. I would go for school t-shirts.

Some gangs "colors" are plain white tee shirts?

And yet this lawsuit disagrees with you .

I say it is a T-shirt, who cares what it says.

You don't like it, don't look at it.

Good, I am glad the kid won.

why make such a big deal out of a saying for a t-shirt, really...dont we have better things in the world to worry about.

we have terrorism going on, yet people are upset about a t-shirt logo?????????????????????

PS: About learning other religious things in school.
I don't have a problem with it, it is nice to know what else is out there in the world. My sons had in elementary school friends of a lot of different religious beliefs because of where we live.....no big deal....now they know how other families live, nothing wrong with that.

a little knowledge will never hurt anyone

One can bring Jesus to school with themselves if they like. Just quietly.
