Dad spanks mom? I don't think he's doing that on the sole reason, she doesn't listen,

I don't agree that having raised a child who, at age 17, still requires an occasional punishment constitutes a "failure". It would be nice if all teens were perfect, but alas...

Wasn't referring to a particular method. But if you have to spank a 17 year old, obviously spanking isn't working and hasn't worked in 17 years, and maybe you should have tried something else a long time ago. And obviously, you aren't going to swat the fanny of somebody bigger than you are. It would take real force to have any effect on someone that age and size, meaning using a weapon or your fist. What would that accomplish?

As I said before, I can't picture a realistic scenario where a parent would have to resort to spanking instead of some other punishment. There is no good reason that I can think of.

Did I say you should spank a 17yr old?
NO.
What I said was." if the 17yr old even thought of striking back they were on the way out before the spanking."

Did I say you should spank them for X,Y Or X? No
But I did spank them on an occasion.
Even had a neighbor spank me once, now that was an eye opener.
It straitened me up that's for sure...

But I could think of things my kids could have done at 17yrs of age to deserve a spanking, and at that age I would not be using my hand, and yes it could be a long time before I saw them again as I would think they would be in jail also for this offense that they revived a spanking for, it certainly would not be for spilling some milk, staying out after curfew or fighting ok maybe for fighting as they like getting hit..

They don't "have to resort" to it. They also don't need to justify it to anyone else if they choose it.

The same thing that using your hand to spank a younger child would accomplish; a punishment and an assertion of authority.

A neighbor? He had no right to do that.

He may not have, but I sure didn't want to tell my old man that we did as I Didn't want him to know what we did and get two of them.
(but I'm sure they talked about it while having a beer in the back yard)
He uses a metal kids shovel too, cria 1966
It left an impression, in two ways, and we never did it again.
