Listen, I'm not asking if it's "right" or "wrong" for people to have kids. I'm only asking if people think there's a logical reason to have kids.

And if we're saying that there is no logical, rational reason to bring another human being into this world, then why is that seen as ok from a societal standpoint?

Hmm.
I can't say I know anyone who had a child because they were bored.

Do you?

What's your reason? Is it emotional? Biological? Spiritual?

Not passing judgement. Just want to know others' thoughts on the subject.

I would like to know one rational logical reason you care about what others do or think.

Their life, their choice, nothing to do with you.

Because:

I'm a curious person. And I'm interested in contrasting perspectives because I think it helps me understand the world better. And also, I would make the argument that your decision to have children affects very many more people than just you.

But in all honesty, if we start questioning why we should care about anyone else's opinion, then why are we here on CD forums to begin with?

I know it sounds mean, but i just don't think I could love someone else's biological kid in the same way as my own. I'm a man too, I'm sure for a woman it's even more so. I think the painful process of giving birth is part of why women are so crazy about their children, not that some adoptive mothers aren't wonderful or better than many birth mothers of course.

I really don't know. It's not the kind of question I go around asking people. You're the one who brought up spontaneity in the context of procreation.

So, it's biological.

Thank you for another actual answer. I think that makes 3 in 39 replies.

Actually I didn't.

I made an observation about you.

Well, that could be a reason, but in general, I think evolution is heavily weighted on the side of procreation to pass on your genes. We don't think about that consciously, but I think it is part of the reason why we have our own children.

I agree with that.

But why are my genes any better than anyone else's though? What if I have a family history of hereditary diseases or mental illnesses?

What I'm really asking is, now that we are no longer cavemen, living off the land and fighting for survival, is the biological urge to pass on my genes a good reason to procreate in modern society?
