How about grandparents in their second childhood? What can they expect? My kids worked and got whatever money they needed. Gas in the car, etc.

Fun! I like.

Our kids earn an allowance based (loosely) on chores and being good... we also offer-up special days where we'll put in the pot, a little extra in the way of a reward, and whoever is first-up to offer their assistance in relation to that reward, get's it. At first the idea caused quite a stir (other kids jealous and upset over not getting extra, too), but as the game progressed we incorporated a sort of teaching into the reward game, explaning that those who offer more, get more, and slowly they began to understand the importance of being available and willing.

Allowance in our house covers taking the garbage out to the back alley for pickup on the morning of, vacuuming, helping setting the table at mealtimes, and, cleaning up after (washing/drying dishes), and bringing ones own dirty laundry to the laundry room and separating colours from darks and whites, and so forth. Easy stuff, but it all adds up.

When my daughter turned 5, we started an allowance using 4 quarters. Each quarter was earned by doing something we agreed upon for the week. (We each picked 2 things that were bugging us the most.) Chores were always expected to be done and usually not included in the chart.

Some examples are: flush the toilet every time, trying new foods, using please and thank you, doing extra chores, etc....

It was great for her to count using quarters!

I give allowances of $2 a week for not doing anything.
