Wow, wonder how earlier generations ever managed to raise their kids to adulthood?
I repeat, screens are not good for babies and small children. Not just my opinion - there have been controlled studies. Language acquisition and parental bonding are stronger without these props. Pediatricians agree. So do other early childhood specialists and children's librarians.
Keep little kids off of screens. Or if you really think you can't manage your kids without them, minimize and supervise their screen time.
I don't agree with kids being babysat by gazing at an Ipad every day, but if it helps through a 2 hour flight, then YES, by all means.
Type in "screaming kids on planes" on the Aviation forum on CD, and see how other people can't STAND screaming kids. It's no fun for ANYONE around them, including the parents. You do what you have to sometimes, and sometimes that means giving them electronics to occupy them.
I wish I'd had electronics when we flew with our 1-1/2 year old years ago. Playing with an Ipad might have helped. He screamed 75% of the flight and we had bottles, snacks, books, toys, a soother, etc. He was just not a happy flier. I must say he did better on the return trip a week later. Cried only 25% of the flight.
For a kid: WINDOW SEAT. I know, it might not do much for a 13 month old, but I vaguely remember as a kid pretending I was "walking on the clouds" with my fingers or something like that.
Too late now, as the OP and her little one are probably already in flight or about to take off, but it's far better to sing to a baby or small child, or to read to them from an actual book, than it is to depend on gadgets and gizmos to do the job for you.
Personally engaging with your child leads to stronger attachment and earlier language comprehension and use, and can be tailored to the child's specific, this-very-moment interests and needs. Plugging the kid into an iPad or popping headphones on him or her does none of these, and instead creates distance between parent and child.
It saddens me to see parents pushing their babies and toddlers (often quite large toddlers) in strollers, all while gazing and texting into their own hand-held devices and ignoring the little ones - who in turn, have their own little hand-held devices.
Both parents and children are missing so much.

Nope. No way do I need to bring headphones. And not that it matters, but I can’t wear earbuds or most headphones. To think that I should subject myself to severe physical discomfort because of your lack of manners is absurd. I can deal with a crying baby on a plane- no issues at all as that is completely different. But to purposely subject people to a device noise such as that, is beyond rude. You need the chill, and manners too apparently. Not I.
I had a flight in February where the two flight attendants up front strapped themselves in and then proceeded to serenade us with Disney songs. Loudly. I was ready to throttle both of them. We were in the first row so got the full benefit of the Little Mermaid and Pocahontas songbook.
How wonderful for all the people around you to have to listen to kid's sing-a-longs.
I get that you're trying to keep your baby from screaming like he did before, but forcing the people around you to listen to kid's music is just as bad.
Came here to say something similar. I was stuck next to a couple with a baby on my last flight and while I could totally live with the baby crying, having to listen to kid's sing-along-songs over and over the whole flight was excruciating. Even with my earplugs in the high-pitched repetitive sounds got through. Unless you have headphones for the baby please, please reconsider that part of the plan
My understanding is that the pressurization is very troublesome for their little ears. Having something to chew on helps with that, so how about a snack until you reach flying altitude and then something to play with, or, hopefully, baby will sleep. It's also probably pretty noisy for them (engine noise) so do they have baby headphones?
My pet peeve is screaming/crying babies on flights. It makes a trip so unpleasant.
Correct. Ear pressure is excutiating for the little ones.
Having a pacifer helps or a soothing item. My g daughter had to have her raggity blanket..and she loved having her cheek gently soothed to calm her.
My mom had the knack for stopping baby cries...she held them...rocker them....it was honestly a sight to behold. One lady kept saying...my kid is colicky. .you won't stop that fuss. But my mom did...it was her gift. That mom was soooo gratefilled...even on a plane to have someone soothe the noise. I mean it's like my mom said. ...we were on a plane....it's not like I was going anywhere with it!
I genuinely believe (sorry I don't use research check facts) that anxious energy of folks sets the stage for little ones. Yet a calm soothing voice and demeanor can lower the volume.
