Should children be a Right for all?

or a Privilege for those that "deserve" it?

and, if it is a Privilege, who determines who "deserves" it?

There are a lot of people out there who shouldn't be parents but who are. It shouldn't be a God-given right, but it shouldn't be a "privilege only for those who deserve it" either.

I'm not sure how to vote.

Sorry, but this is a non-starter. Reproduction is a basic biological function. Asking whether it is a right or a privilege is akin to asking whether going to the bathroom should be a right or a privilege. A more pertinent question should be whether anybody should have the right (or a privilege, whatever) to control someone else's reproductive organs. Now there's a good topic for you.

This isn't another abortion thread.

I think this was a hypothetical question (at least I hope), ignoring the basic biological fact that any man and any woman CAN have children. I don't think the OP was suggesting forced abortions or even advocating any type of legislation....possibly the state being able to take kids away from those who are "undeserving," but certainly neither forcing nor banning abortion.

I guess short of outright abuse/neglect...it might be hard to define "undeserving". Would it be the parents who struggle financially but try to do everything they can for their child, the parents that have an unusually large number of kids, have a different "other" parent for each child, the wealthy parents that have 3 full time nannies to raise their kids for them?

That's true. I'm certainly not advocating banning anyone from having or raising children for reasons short of outright abuse/neglect. That said, I personally think that some parents are terrible at it.

How about forced sterilization? Or forced birth control? Interfering in reproduction in any manner, up to and including taking children away for failure to obtain government permission raises the question of what right you have to exercise authority over other people's reproductive organs. What makes you "deserve" to have children? Is the government that makes you fertile? Sorry to be blunt, but this is such BS.

I wasn't the OP and I do not support any of those things. I do support taking children away from parents who are abusive or neglectful. That's it.

I was thinking from the angle -

we could prob put birth control in the food/water supply, keeping people from getting preggers unless they took special pills.

the question then becomes, who determines who gets the pills?

we all know people that are horrible parents, and so many people have unwanted pregnancies.

would the cost outweigh the benefits?

What? No.

First, there's already enough crap in our food and water.

Second, this plan seems Hitler-esque to me.

There always have been and always will be bad parents. For those who are REALLY bad, take their kids away. The government has no business deciding who can and can't parent a child....especially not before the child(ren) is/are even born.
