Glad you were able to find an idea for him. Another thing might have been a CD case so he could store his CDs or DVDs or Video games in. Maybe in a couple of years you could get him a jump drive to put all of his photos (if he has his own digital camera) and what nots on from the computer.
Many 13 year olds do have their own digital cameras (they're not expensive). That's a great idea for a gift.

When I was thirteen I was so much cooler and grown-up than any adults could possibly understand and I was endlessly patronized by the pathetic attempts of my parents, aunts, uncles and parents of my friends to deduce what I could actually be in need of.
I think that a gift card, while it may seem like the easy way out, is guaranteed to be used and appreciated. That said, any 13 year old in 2009 is going to be something of a technophile. Any tech gadget will probably be used and appreciated as well, just make sure you aren't facilitating the collection and concealment of internet pornography.
Any MMA apparel or gear would be a great gift to any teenage boy interested in Mixed Martial Arts or UFC. If he likes that stuff, try Tap Out as a brand. They make awesome quality stuff. Its really stylish too
My daughter got invited to a boy's birthday pool party. What do we get him? I'd want it to be a little more unique than a gift card (her idea), but don't know what else there is to get a 13 yo boy. He's into sports.
Kids today actually love gift cards. I know - we parents think it's totally impersonal and boring... but kids today seem to really appreciate them. My 14 year old son and his friends actually have a few of the same cards that they recharge and pass around year after year with each of their birthdays. That was actually one of the other parents ideas - she thought it would be better that way since the boys were just wanting GC's each year anyway, we might as well recycle them and save some plastic!
Target and Gamestop gift cards are the most popular ones for teen boys, it seems.
Ooooh that's a good idea, too.... in fact both our boys (9 and 14) have asked for this for Christmas... they love listening to their mp3 players and are always looking for new music to download.
Two or four tickets to a big sporting event (not a local game).
One time, one of my kids simply received the use of one of his friends season passes for a night. So in a way it cost them nothing. Him and I had a great night out. Went to the footie. Good seats. No $20 plastic toy to throw out.

honestly? Cash. Or a Visa Gift card that lets him feel no tonly grown up but allows him to get whatever he wants.
Nitric acid (sufuric acid and Glycerin are readily available- nitric acid is hard to get).
