Dear Forum,

A very good friend of mine has graduated with an Education degree (History) from Penn State University, University Park. This fall he student taught in the Philadelphia area. He is interested in a teaching position or permanent substitute teacher position in Centre County or a nearby county in a public or private school. He has had experience working in job training involving a summer program of high school students who endure disadvantaged circumstances and he has also had experience coaching baseball for middle school students. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be most appreciated.

Thank you

(take with a grain of salt since most of this is my observations, not particular knowledge)

As far as I'm aware of, teaching positions in south central PA are fairly tight. I know the teacher at one of the local catholic schools commutes an hour because it was the closest job he could find...

agreed. I live in centre county, and know some teachers who aren't working b/c they can't get jobs....might be best to get experience elsewhere first, or plan on commuting.

Thank you both,

I was wondering if there were any private schools or alternative types of schooling, e.g. the Friends School is a Quaker School, not a mainstream public school, or some type alternative schooling, or different ideas for an education history major.

-Much appreication

Texas (San Antonio), Las Vegas (Clark County) and many areas of North Carolina are in need of ALL teachers. PA is saturated with history teachers, but parochial or private schools might be an agreeable start for your friend. Penn State should have a placement office or on-line site for job openings in the field of educaton.

There's actually a few private schools, I'm not sure if it's any easier to get a job at them. Nittany Christian School (only thru middle school), some new charter school, Grace Prep School, Friends School..I'm sure there's more.

I'd check on www.statecollege.com to get listings.

Has he checked with the university? Since he graduated from Penn State and wants to teach in that area I would think Penn State would have listings of job openings for graduates.

There are numerous websites out there. Below are three that came up in a simple google search. For specific school districts, just go to their websites and see if there are any openings and apply. He needs to have an up to date resume that includes lesson plans, references and state clearances.
