Ok, so you are against the expansion of 422, and also against the increased funding for SEPTA? How, pray tell, do we deal with traffic? Usually, people are pro-highway and anti-public transportation, or vice-versa. You seem to be anti-both. But, then again, if you don't believe in funding transportation, I guess that makes sense.

Have you ever driven in this region when the regional rail system is not operational due to a strike? It's much worse. For that reason alone I am ok with providing SEPTA, and other systems throughout the state, with funding from my gas tax dollars. Then there's the real estate value bump that the regional rail system provides to communities with a station, plus the private development that occurs near stations. I don't benefit directly from all of this, but I benefit indirectly, plus, since my head isn't firmly lodged in some New Hanover Township cornfield I am able to support something even though it benefits my community but not me directly.

That's just another reason to not give them anymore money and put it towards more roads.

I do like rail but I want to see one big identifiable project. I will enter a contract that for the next 5 years I will pay 20 cents more on a gallon tax but at the end of the 5 years I want to see regional rail extended to Pottstown. You want to lighten traffic on 422 that is the way to do it, not taking up more of the median. I want to see big ideas not pay extra for someone to grease the train axels.

This map is eye opening. Look what has happened to our “low tax” state. What is it about PA that needs fixing more than 3/4 of the country?

I suspect many of those other states are using money from the general fund for roads.

Isn’t it usually the other way; moving money collected for roads to the general fund or other favored accounts? Anyway, lowest I have seen around here is $2.77. Not bad if it keeps it up. I am happy with $2.50.

He's a Democrat and we are in a hard core union run state. What do you think?

The map is combining the federal and state taxes. The federal tax is like 18 cents, about 30%of that is shifted to mass transit. When you get into the state taxes there is no common policy and it can be nightmare figuring out what is going where. For example in PA you have money being shifted from the fuel tax to mass transit, about half the tolls from the PA Turnpike are shifted back to PennDOT. It's the world's largest shell game.

what does that map indicate, exactly? Tax burden doesn't make too much sense because then why would New Jersey be in the lower third?

It might be ... if you'd bothered to post what exactly this map is comparing.
