According to the utility spokesmen interviewed, the expected increase is due to "market forces". Odd that in a state that still has a lot of coal and is a leader in natural gas production we'd let "market forces" do a number on us like this.

https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/...e-hikes-winter

"Pike County Light & Power, which serves approximately 4,800 customers in northeast Pennsylvania, will see the biggest surge in their PTCs, up from 6.5234 cents to 9.796 cents per kilowatt (kWh), which represents a spike of 50.2%."

PCL&P is a small utility that I suppose lacks the power to squeeze power producers. I guess we should be happy by comparison if we only get hit with a 25% increase.

Having "a lot of coal" doesn't mean much if the power plants using it have been shut down.

Yes, and those plants were shut down by political forces, not market forces. Either way, the utilities are saying these price increases are out of their hands.

Pike County Power and Light used to be owned by Con Ed but they sold it to Corning (NY) Natural Gas. They get all of their power from the NYISO not through the PJM. It is unique in that respect.

That's still one of the lowest rates in the country at 9.796 cents!

Here in WA state they call our electric rates the lowest, and we are currently at .095631/kWh.

Are you saying people should be thankful they're "only" getting a 50% increase because it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick?

Southern New York and Pike County P&L got a good chunk of its electric power from the Indian Point 2 & 3 nuclear power stations, which provided a stable low cost supply. Wacko Cuomo forced the 2 plants to shut down permanently and now power is generated by natural gas turbines and the cost of natural gas has been rising.

Well, it is, but my point is that a 50% increase on a rate of only 6.5234 cents is a lot better than many other places, such as California where the rate in the Bay Area is 26 cents/kWh with no rate increase.

Local TV news is catching on. I saw last night that Met Ed rates will be rising 4.2% and PPL rates 26%. They blame the rising cost of natural gas.

It would be nice if NY could break that conga line of governors that refuse to allow fracking and increase the supply which is obviously badly needed.

Serious question here, a bit off-topic, and not trying to be political:

Has the fracking re-started in PA? Wolf is generally friendly to that industry. Last I heard, a couple years ago, fracking had slowed down significantly. Given renewed demand, has it re-started?
