I have read on this board that there are some anticipated changes with some military leaving soon. This would cause changes in real estate in the area. Anyone have any details to share? Thanks!

Every so often, Congress goes through a round of Base Realignment and Closure (aka BRAC) in an attempt to maximize military readiness while reducing costs. Pensacola was suppose to lose about 2,000 active duty and career civil service jobs. The Ft. Walton Beach area is supposed to gain 2,000+ active duty and career civil service jobs. (provided the city of Vlparaiso doesn't manage to screw up the arrival of the F-35 training center) Add in families and multiplier effects and how a lot of those people are coming or going in large groups and it can cause a significant fluxuation in local available housing stock.

The situation that beachmouse explained is happening in the area in NJ I came from. I believe Fort Monmouth is scheduled to be closing in the next year. Many families are relocating to Maryland. From what I have read the prices of homes have increased dramatically in the area that surrounds the base.
